Dear Barenforum members!?

I've been thinking (yes, I know, I know, EVERYONE hates it when that
happens) about the next Baren get together and then I went to this most
inspiring place for a 2-week residency:
http://www.goldwellmuseum.org
Please click on the Red Barn Art Center because that will be our work-room.

The nearby town of Beatty, Nevada has all the comforts of any rural town
anywhere, plenty of cheap accommodations, dining, and yes yes, phone and
internet just like the best of 'em. Well, it is rural Nevada, but also a
major travel route from Las Vegas to Reno, our biggest two cities AND one of
the gateways to Death Valley National Park.
Please take a looksie at:
Beatty, Nevada
http://www.beattynevada.org
and
Death Valley National Park (nearby)
http://www.nps.gov/deva/

With that arsenal of wonderful desert images in mind and AFTER and only
AFTER you have perused those websites, please take five minutes and go to
our preliminary survey. Here we gauge interest of the membership in
gathering, timing and place. Keep in mind this is very very preliminary and
nothing has been decided as of yet.

When you are ready, let us know what you think:

The Survey has been revised and the question with multiple columns is now
fixed to allow multiple answers! Sorry bout that...
For those that have already taken the survey, I believe you can go back and
edit your responses, although you can't take the survey again.

Some links for some really well done woodcuts. First a site I found
browsing of the collected works of Walter Phillips, a well-known (but not to me!)
Canadian artist with lovely atmospheric landscapes. Some really nice Moku
Hanga work starting around 1917 both with and without a keyblock. His previous
work as a printmaker and wood engraver are evident. See:
http://www.sharecom.ca/phillips/

Meanwhile, near at hand and in the list of baren members? (I discovered
during "open studios" that she lives just a few blocks away) are the nature
prints by Andrea Rich. These are oil based reduction woodblocks printed with a
press and a baren. I was very impressed when I asked her about her reject
rate (mine is still too high) and she replied, " I usually start with about 32
pieces of paper and usually end up with....32. Considering the number of
colors and detail I was quite impressed. The neatness and organization of her
studio are probably indicative of her attention to detail while carving and
printing. Her blocks were very neat cleanly carved. There is hope!
See her work at: http://andrearich.com/

Walter J. started out working in watercolours... he then turned
towards engraving and them on to the Moku Hanga imagery, all the time
doing watercolours.

Walter died here in Victoria in 1963. My career has become somewhat
intrinsically entangled with Phillips as I got to know the family.
The connection occurred when I had the exhibition our print at the
Victoria Art Gallery in 1999. I have since had the honour of showing
with his work in 3 other occasions across Canada... the latest in
Montreal.

I think the most gratifying happening is that Walter’s grandson who
lives in Windsor Ontario. has been collection my work ever since the
Victoria exhibition... Up until two years ago, when Phillip Adamson’s
(grandson), mother died in Victoria, we had a some lovely visits...
Phillip is an accomplished musician teaching in Windsor University.

“York Boat on Lake Winnipeg“, www.sharecom.ca/phillips/133.html is
one of his most famous pieces and commands a price of $30,000.00

We can only hope, eh guys.

Regards
Graham

Maria... & everyone else...

I am totally revved that something is in the works for another Summit. The area looks great, a perfect place for inspiration and learning. I've taken the survey; definitely count me in.

My only disappointment is that we have to wait a whole year plus for this. The last one (and the only one I've been to) was such a great learning experience. Though we all toil away alone with our Muses, there is nothing like working shoulder to shoulder with like-minded artists. I can't tell you all how valuable it is to see how other artists work. I picked up so many tips in that week that made my work faster and better... I'm not sure I would have acquired all that information on my own ever.

I would encourage you all to plan and save for this. It's a fabulous experience and a wonderful opportunity to meet each other...
