Hi all,

Well, I'm up for the challenge if you'll have me - 1 oban sized woodcut in an edition of 31 to be delivered by November 1, 2008.

It's been quite a while since I was an active poster but some of the old timers might remember me.

Here's a link to my website..

www.marykrieger.com

Check out A Magpie Folio in the galleries section to see some of my woodcuts.

Let me know what you decide.

Benny and all,

Here's is something we've done in the past, really it is up to the
coordinator to "herd cats" as much as humanly possible within reason (one of
my cats just spent a night outside after she reached the limits of my
"herding" patience).

What I recommend:

1. Issue ONE LAST CALL to both the signed up participants and the
waitlisters.
2. If anyone answers, put them on the list in the order they signed up.
3. Once you have waited a reasonable amount of time (a week max), officially
drop the participants who did not answer and let me know who they are so the
proper penalty can be applied.
4. Accept new eager beavers who swear they will produce 31 prints last
minute, like the one who already answered "the call of the desperate."
5. After a reasonable amount of time, again, close the shuffling and herding
procedure and go forward with how ever many participants we have on hand.
This should happen no more than two full weeks prior to the deadline, which
would make it around October 18. If there are less than 30, notify all the
participants of the new number.

I think that should be fair to all involved.

Maria

Shawn,

If you decide to get the honing strop, I suggest getting the one with
the grooves that fit the shape of the tools. Also, just using a strop
will not totally give you a very very sharp edge. It is best to have
wet stones to use. I suggest a good fine stone to use either before
you begin a new carving project or right after you finish one so your
tools are extra sharp. I have found that unless my tools are either
very dull or chipped that I really do not need to use the course
stones, but rather the finer one and than finish off with a strop.
For best results you need a courser stone, a finer stone and a leather
strop. Good tools also are important because they will hold an edge a
lot longer than cheap tools. Moving from lino to wood means you must
maintain your tools correctly. The better the wood, the better the
tools the easier it will be to carve a nice block. Further, I have to
agree with Graham, I rarely use a v gauge. If you learn to use that
hanga knife properly it will do a better job than the v gauge.
I am certainly not the most skilled carver in this group, but, I made
the transition from being only a painter to carving. I made the
transition from lino to wood and am glad I did. Having been there not
that long ago, I suggest good tools and good sharpening stones, it
will make a huge difference. Personally, I do not like shina, I prefer
a solid piece of wood. Start with a nice piece of basswood (just my
preference).

Subject: [Baren 37063] Future exchange change suggestion
Send Message: To this poster

Hi Benny and All,

I know Iım still new, but after completing two exchanges, one of them short
a print, I do have a suggestion:

Since most everyone in an exchange makes more than 31 prints AND since most
exchanges have a few artists on the waiting list, WHY NOT consider ALL those
folks in the exchange.

For example, 35 people sign up for an exchange and each one sends in 36
prints (one for the archive). If, in the eleventh hour, 4 people get lost in
the mix there would still be 31 prints in the coordinatorıs hands and he or
she would simply return the ³extra² prints to their rightful owner or
perhaps send them to the newly revived Swap Shop!

I guess this would foul up the ³magic 30² but in the case of Exchange 38,
the alternates might have taken the exchange more seriously and finished
their prints. It would be great if everyone could be included (to a point
where there would need to be a double exchange). I mean, isnıt the idea of
printing to make MANY copies available to virtually everyone?

Peace,
Eileen

Gee Oscar, what can I say? I've posted the reminder numerous times... and am
in the process of finding substitutes kind enough, like Mary Krieger, to fill
the gap since three of the four waiting list printmakers have declined. If the
difference of running 3 prints is that important, I am not sure that I can
please you.

So sorry to have been difficult. I had no idea that it would trouble anyone
this way to put out a call for help. Perhaps volunteering for this task was an
error in my part? At any rate, we just need a 2 more and then all will be
well, so everybody do your printing, please. I look forward to seeing your art!

Hi Benny & Baren,
There may be a "protocol" on this from past exchanges, and hopefully one of
the oldtimers can chime on this.  I am in this exchange and would hope, if we
decide to go with 27 instead of 30 participants, that we decide in time for
folks to reduce the number of prints to send to you.
