Gayle, if you are not bringing up a wire edge along
the entire length of the cutting edge and then
removing it properly you will not get a good cutting
edge.

It's easier to get a wire edge and remove it on small
tools, without even being aware of what you've done,
but larger tools require more diligence.

I suggest a different mindset or goal than most people
have, with which to approach sharpening.

Instead of focusing on getting the tool back to
cutting the wood, you should focus on getting the wire
edge, its' removal and the polish/smoothing that
occurs as you move through the finer grits and honing.

Thinking about the wood pulls your attention away from
where it needs to be, on the tool. If you help the
tool be at its' best, then it will always be able to
do its' job when it works with you at your carving.

My 2¢.

Cheers

There is a major exhibition of works by Hokusai at the Guimet Museum
in Paris from May 21 to August 4. The website
has a long essay (in French). The English version of the website does
not seem to have this. But here's the link
to the museum: http://www.guimet.fr

Best to all,
Ray Hudson
