I know this has been mentioned before, but has anyone successfully used an
old washing machine ringer as a press? I saw one yesterday in a junk shop
for about $30 and was tempted. If a barener says it's worth it, I may go
back and get it.

Thanks!

Jenn

There are plans floating around online, but I think some work is needed to
adapt the wringer to life as a press.

Here's one link:

Taking a vacation when getting a press is a great way to go. I have had my
Praga, from Canada now a least 10 years and that is what we did, took a
vacation. The shipping to Vancouver BC was not bad. But to get it from
there was quite expensive. So, we took our truck to BC and picked it up
ourselves. I doubt it cost less but we had a grand mini vacation.

I also would suggest looking around for a used press. I have this little
guy down here in Mexico that my husband found advertised in the nickle ads
in Portland some years ago. It was missing a small part and needed a little
cleaning, but it works for smaller projects just fine and the cost was $75.
My husband finds interesting things reading ads and he has placed ads in the
wanted columns and gotten some amazing replies. You might consider putting
in an ad that says wanted printing press and see what turns up. You might
be amazed.

Cut, print and be happy,
Marilynn, still in Baja Sur Mexico

Nipping Presses are rather complicated in their care.
They stay hungry and if you don't feed them enough
grease they nip your hands when you come near and can
chew on the covers of books you are trying to bind.
No, I'm totally full of it but I couldn't resist.

I hope someone answers what a nipping press is because I haven't figured it out, although the words conjure up many strange beasts.

"Nipping press" is just another phrase for "book binding press". Typically they are of cast iron construction, with fixed bed and movable platen, the platen being lowered by a very large screw. They are generally made to sit on a table top or counter, and they weigh 75 to 150 pounds.
