Welcome to Baren. It is the best group!
The members are the most creative and from the last week you can tell that
they are also caring and sensitive.

I plan to be 'at her memorial' when I'm doing it, on April 12th
at 3:30 PM Pacific time. But I can be convinced to fly kites
at other times... ;-)

Hi Bill,

Welcome to Baren!
I saw you signed up for the Exchange 37, nothing like jumping in head first.
We're a friendly group so any questions that should come up along the way,
feel free to ask and you shall receive 100 answers...well, at least 10 or
so.

On 3/28 Eileen Corder tried sending a message to Baren, and because of
code in her email program it never went through in its entirety. So
(at her request and in her new setting of plain text) here it is
again. Let's hope it works this time. For those receiving messages
one by one, this will be redundant, and I apologize, but this is for
those who receive posts in digest form.

Subject: [Baren 35521] Wanda
Send Message: To this poster

I was saddened to hear that Wanda had died. She was my first contact with
Baren in December, getting me started. She was full of a sense of humor and
modest. One of her prints, that she had in a past exchange, really struck a
chord in me. We had corresponded briefly about it, then I read she was ill,
and now...

I know she did lots of great work at Baren, both as an exchange artist and
as a forum editor. For me, she put into print a mysterious love and longing
I have for the mountains. If you have time, revisit her print 'Mt. Hood at
Dusk' in Exchange #16. It may seem plain at first, but if you look closely
you'll see a light along the right side of the road. Is it a traveler in the
dusk? A signpost catching the headlights of the viewer's car? Whatever it
is, this light pulls something out of the dark, as Mt. Hood adds light, and
other mountains add darkness. It's that light in darkness and darkness in
light that block printing is so good at. Thank you, Wanda, for such a
wonderful vision and the skill at bringing it to the page.

Peace,
Eileen

Hello, Guadalupe,

At this point this is all that is published as far as the
conference is concerned. There will be more information
forthcoming. I'll let you know when I find things out. If you
want to call the Printmaking Department at Columbia, more
information may be available there, but this is very early in
the planning for specifics.

Columbia is located right downtown Chicago. That whole area is
humming with students. Several universities and colleges have
entire buildings in the area. (What fun to be 'that' age and
live in the city as you study!)

Here is a google map of the area. I'm sure that many of the
activities will center at Columbia, although there will be trips
to galleries, too. You can see
that it is very centrally located, although Columbia owns
several buildings just south of this location also.

The Art Institute and Millenium Park aren't far away, and the
Museum Campus on the lakefront will be a wonderful place to
spend any extra time or energy! Grant Park is our great
lakefront park!

You can take public transportation from either airport into the
City. Coming from O'Hare Airport you'd come into Ogilvie
Transportation Center by Metra rail. Coming into the City from
Midway Airport you'd come by the elevated rail system on the CTA
(Orange Line).

I'll try to keep you informed as plans become more clear, but
don't hesitate to ask if I can help! It would be great if you
could come! The SGC is an especially good gathering place for
folks teaching printmaking in the various universities and
colleges (as well as for the rest of us printing folks).

Welcome to Chicago, Guadalupe!
