commerical reuse of the image is one thing which the law should protect but
resale of a print is a different thing. The artist got payment the first
time.

When you sell your work you can ask for the buyer to sign a
contract. In the contract you can put anything you want the buyer to
agree. For example, that you would get a specified % of any profit
from the resale of the said work.

I just had to get into this fray...

Sell your work as fast as you can make it (if you are lucky enough) and let
your bus-full of lawyers worry about collecting your back-royalties when you
get famous. Re-sale royalties...sheeshh...
Artists have a tough enough time selling work in any day and age; try the
contract thing and you will see prospective customers ROTFLOL (rolling on
the floor laughing out loud). There is a blatant excess of art and artists
in the world and not enough wall space or collectors' drawers to hold it
all. Any additional obstacle the artist places between themselves and their
collectors will result in less and less sales. Ink on paper, that's all our
art is, all any of us can hope for is to catch the attention of the buyer
with a unique image and decent craftsmanship.

Traditionally the printmaker has been the "artist of the people", making
original multiples and selling at reasonable prices so that the "man on the
street" could own a piece of original art. This has sadly gone by the
wayside and now I find printmakers out there in the festival circuit grossly
inflating their prices and sitting very sadly in the back of their booths,
all the while blaming "sell outs" like myself for keeping our prices at the
reach of the common folk.
I personally subscribe to the Dave Bull Wise Way. Sell a whole bunch of the
damn things for cash right now and get on with your next piece.

Anyone in Vail or Telluride (Colorado, high Rockies, USA) the next couple of
weekends, August 10-12 and 17-19 respectively, feel free to drop by and say
howdy to this happy printmaker.

Back to the framing table...

Maria

Message posted from: Google alert ...

Story: http://www.sunvalleyonline.com/news/article.asp?ID_Article=3832

Quote: The Sun Valley Center for the Arts is offering a chance to study with one of the featured artists at its annual Arts & Crafts Festival, held this year August 10-12. Take a break from your usual routine and spend a day in The Center's Hailey classroom learning woodblock printing from a master!

Nick Wroblewski is a Minnesota-based printmaker specializing in hand-cut woodblock prints. He studied art at Bennington College in Vermont and later taught himself the technique of relief printmaking. Majoring in painting and sculpture, Nick combined elements of the two and found himself deeply intrigued by the many possibilities within printmaking. He has been busy creating new images with woodblocks since 1996. You can find out more about him and see examples of his work at www.nickwroblewski.com.

The class will offer an introduction to the basics of creating a multicolor woodblock print. Students will be shown techniques for transfer, carving, reduction and multiple block methods. This class will help simplify the seemingly complicated world of layers, woodcarving, reversed imagery, registration and pulling prints. It's also the first class to use The Center's new printing press, so come check it out!

The one-day workshop meets Tuesday, August 14 (two days after Arts & Crafts Festival weekend) from 10 am to 4 pm in Hailey. Fee is $70 for Sun Valley Center for the Arts members and $120 for non-members, plus a $20 supply fee (the instructor is providing all the printmaking materials - all students need to bring is paper and pencil for taking notes or sketching out ideas). Scholarships and teaching assistantships are available; please ask for more information. Registration deadline is Tuesday, July 31.

To register, stop by The Center in Ketchum or call 208.726.9491 ex 10. For more information on this and all Sun Valley Center classes, go to:

A simple Bill of Sale , as suggested by Artist's Magazine , can take care of
artists' concerns. You don't have to be "famous" to be protected. Besides,
it is a record of your sales for future mailing lists,
In decades of experience no one has ever hesitated to sign a Bill of Sale.
Buyers recognize this as a bona fide professional sale.
(Laws have limited applicability to graphic artists)

For an excellent article on the price of art in the contemporary market, see
"Out of Sight", an interview of Eugene V. Thaw in Architectural Digest,
June 2007. Strongly agreeing, my leading Letter to the Editor of Architectural
Digest appears in the August 2007 issue. As I was reading the Letter of
response, I was surprised to see it was mine! Magazines are in the library.

Best to all
Carol Lyons
