Linda, I think that if you soaked your shina in water for a long time,
a tiny bit of the edges might curl a bit, but I've had absolutely no
problem. I use mostly oil-based inks and mineral oil for cleanup, but
others use shina for water-based with no problems.

I live in a super humid climate here in Puerto Rico with constant ocean breezes and no air conditioning in my studio and my McClain's shina has never shown any indications of a warp. I'm very happy with it.

Linda,
I personally have never had a problem with the shina warping or doing
anything it was not supposed to do. Most of mine are carved on both
sides, so there is little left to shellac - which I have done, but
never saw that it made any noticeable difference.

Cheers ~

Howdy all,
All of the following information comes from me living with a 'wood-guy'...(I
know more than I actually want to!)
Shina (or other plywoods and even solids) shouldn't warp if you follow a few
simple rules -
Warpage is caused by uneven moisture content. If one side absorbs more
moisture and swells and the other side doesn't, it will probably warp. What
you do to one side, do to the other. In other words, if you seal one side,
seal the back. If you want to wet down one side, wet down the other.
(Don't soak plywoods in water, this could cause it to delaminate.)
If you do get a lot of water on it, leave it to dry so that it dries evenly
on both sides. Laying it flat on a table is actually a bad idea since the
top will dry quicker than the bottom causing it to warp. I usually try to
stand mine on an edge. If you have a very large piece that won't stand up,
try 'stickering' it. Use long pieces of narrow wood to elevate it from the
table top or floor, so that the air flows evenly all around and under it.
Just remember the golden rule - keep the moisture content evenly
distributed.
Hope this helps!
