Hi All,
I read the discussion on brush care and wanted to put
in my two cents. I have a lovely studio with big
warehouse windows and I put my watercolor and other
paint brushes in jars on the windowsill. I was
working in other media that didn't involve using these
brushes for a year or two and when I went to use one I
was horrified to find that the bristles were bleached
and brittle as if they had had way too many chemical
treatments at a beauty parlor, excuse me, hair salon.
So my tip is--do not store them where direct sun can
fall on them!!!!!

Lynn,
I am so sorry about your brushes....in my youth I
sold drapery and window treatments...people were
always worried about fabric rotting and with good
reason...if you hung levi jeans in the window for a
year they would rot. They make linings for drapery out
of white fabric that has been treated to withstand the
sun and fabric still rots. The sun is our most
powerful chemical...it will bleach paper and it will
kill a lot of bacteria. That is why it is pretty safe
to swim in outdoor pools but you should be careful of
the indoor ones...the sun just steriizes everything.
I have done color fastness tests for pigment in the
sun and belive me...nothing is safe from direct sun,
with some pigments it only takes a few hours to change
them. Keep all your artwork out of the sun and even
strong indirect sun will fade some colors.
Best to all,
Barbara
