Rice Paste.

I have been given a recipe for rice paste that the bookbinders in
Western Australia are using but I have been told that it will only keep
for a few days in the refrigerator. That doesn't sound very promising
for longevity for woodblock printmaking.

Does anyone have any suggestion as to a preservative that will keep it
longer, please?

Please keep in mind that our weather doesn't get much below 1ºc but is
often up into the 40º for several days at a time in summer.... this may
help... and it is not very humid.

My last batch of rice paste I had to import from Darwin in the Northern
Territory and another from Melbourne in Victoria (Australia that is)

Thanking you in anticipation.

Jan,

My reading suggests a few drops of formaldehyde
will do it. I have never tried it myself, so
cannot vouch for that. I have not found a ready
source on the open market for the stuff. You
might try a local university biology department
or your local undertaker. Given that you would
only need a very small amount, you might just
score some for free ... or swap a print ....

I have made rice paste using various recipes. The
most reliable by far was just to boil up white
rice ... usually when cooking for eating the
water is absorbed in about 15 minutes ... but do
not let it dry out ... keep adding water so that
you can boil it for about 30-45 minutes and still
have visible water. Then put the mush into a
blender ... voila!!! wonderful, smooth paste ...
it should keep for a week in the fridge.

Cheers ... Charles

Ray,

It sounds wonderful but the link would not open for me. I will be flying to Seattle in two weeks and perhaps will get a chance to see the scroll.

Thanks,

Leah
