Dear Bareners!

Most of the time being lurking, today I would like to ask you something.

I am right now working on a print and I have difficulties as the paper
gets waves. It appears especially in the spaces between printed areas
I printed black with pure sumi ink - apparently the ink is contracting
the paper. But there are other waves too.

It is a very beautiful 100% kozo paper (56\" x 16\"), 54 gr, unsized,
done quite traditionally, dried on boards. I first wanted to do a
one-block print but I ended up with cutting three plates, partly with
large areas of betazuri. I have size but as I know and experienced
that sizing is risky I mostly prefer to work with the paper as it is.
I dried it in cardboards.

Do you have some idea or advice you could give me?

Kind regards, and thank you again for your commitment--

Eva

You mention drying the paper on boards but there is no mention that you
moisten the paper before printing...did you ? I think if you print on dry
paper with water/sumi that could result in the
paper misbehaving....

Eva,
is the paper buckling as you dry it? If so I have the
answer for you...lay it in the cardboard for 20 minues
and then move it to dry cardboard or blotters. I never
weight my prnts and by using this method mine are
always flat. The boltters absorb the largest amount of
water at the start and then they can absorb no more so
everything starts to buckle...so moving the work to
new blotters will keep all flat as it dries. I do have
a large stack of them so possibly the weight of them
alone is enough weight to keep it flat, but even the
top layers are flat.

If it is buckling as you print, somenohow your paper
must not be evenly damp. I can see no other reason for
this unless you are in really warm dry climate and the
paper cannot hold water well going from the damp pack
to the block. If the paper is too dry, the damp areas
with the ink will add more liquid and cause the paper
to buckle..if you lay it out in a damp pack with
newsprint between the water in the sumi area will
dispurse to the rest of the paper and it should
flatten out. It is the difference between the dry and
damp areas of the paper that cause this...lay it in
this damnp pak and when it is even, put it in the
blotters or cardboard to dry.
Good luck

Remember the carpenters phrase, "measure twice, cut once"??? Well, when one
is cutting paper remember to measure twice and cut once. I almost never cut
mine the wrong size and I always double check, than how did i get a piece
that was only 4 1/2 inches wide instead of 5 inches. Hmmm, that one will
remain with the artist!
