Marilyn

I, also bought a head magnifier from Harbor Freight, it is great and I use
it for small woodcuts and engravings. Also bought an Hydraulic Press. It
works for small prints. I love it. I get very lost in that store, it has so
many items that can be used for printmaking. Also buy my latex free gloves
there. They are so much cheaper than any place I have found.
No I do not work for them.

For the past couple of years I've been eyeballing the print auctions on Artelino.com, and have noticed that participation varies greatly. Every now and then there are fabulous older japanese prints with no bids and I can get one at the Reserve Price (just picked up a Katsuyuki Nishijima print for 60 bucks).

When I look at these prints I notice that flat areas of color have an almost speckled application to them. I am hoping that those of you who you who do hanga style printing may be able to explain how this effect is achieved. I've only done Western style printing (application via rollers using oil based inks) and have managed to get something similar by laying on the ink "dry"... that is, not filling the roller completely with ink, but the results vary greatly based on how tacky the ink is and how spaced out I am ("coffee, the miracle drug, get some today!").

I've also been experimenting with some less than elegant techniques....meat tenderizer to give the wood some, um, texture...and various wood working tools such as nail setters (punches)......and have gotten interesting results. Still, would like to know how the older prints managed to get that texture though. I'd switch to water based inking like y'all use just to get that look.

Cheers

It's called 'goma-zuri' (sesame-seed printing). Dry paper, little (or
no) paste, and light (or no) baren pressure, should do the trick.

There is a section in Chapter 4 of Yoshida's book that discusses it:

Hi All,
I just had to tell someone what I just discovered--you
can use the Japanese method of paste and pigment and
brushing on a linoleum block and it comes out great!
I was trying to get a very pale image on my business
cards before printing the text and wasn't doing well
rolling ink on--it was messy and too dark. So I tried
the paste and ink and the problem was solved. And the
flat color areas aren't spotty the way rolling ink on
comes out. Maybe I'm the last one to discover this
but from now on this is the way I'm printing linoleum.
I use a ball-bearing baren, by the way.

One more FINAL comment re cards - I haven't looked at the large list
of signups for the Boar recently but there are many who haven't said
a word on the Forum
re status of prints - it would be nice if the people who really find
they can't do them at all after signing up would let everyone know -a
quick email is easy.

Late is fine with me as I'm always late cutting and printing and
mailing but love continuing the tradition - as many of you have said
it's great to receive prints at
any time and always entertaining to go through the albums one's made
of previous years. I always have to print more as friends and family
here have become
accustomed to collecting them since I send cards for bithdays, etc. I
also spend a lot of time experimenting and trying to achieve decent
prints so that delays things.

Marlynn, if you find postage costly in the U.S. just think Cdn stamps
to the U.S.(where most of mine go) are 93 cents now = about $1.25 U.S.!
I've mailed out about half at this point and like Marilynn have
received about 20 and I don't think much gets lost in the mail.

BTW Maria Regina Pinto Pereira I believe you forgot to include a
print in the lovely red envelope I just received -however there is a
tiny one on upper left corner
of what must be the accompanying info' paper.

Once more if anyone is missing a rooster, monkey or dog please let me know.

Dave,

Thanks for the link..... apparently there are more elegant methodologies than meat tenderizers.

I also found the Zokin-Zuri method interesting.....In my last email I forgot to mention that one of the things that I had tried and which worked rather well was the use of a coarse sponge ....I would apply the pigment in a flat even tone, then use a dry, coarse sponge to "pick up" the pigment, which gave a good amount of control on how much was left on the plate. Continual dabbing of the sponge onto the pigment would product a fine speckled effect much like aquatint...and could also create gradations.......but it was the coarser look that was eluding me.

Dan,
Nice website. I tried to "contact" from there and
nada. Same for signing the guest book. But otherwise
it looks nice. I like the slideshow.

Oh dear. The beat goes on. ;-j

I love getting cards all year long. I never know when I'll find a lovely piggy (or doggy!) in my mailbox. 8-] It makes me happy.

I'm almost done sending out doggies and still printing piggies. Broken wrist is my excuse, but it's no more or less valid than any other. Life intrudes. We deal.

I suggest adapting an antisipatory patience, rather like waiting for Christmas. 8-] It makes the wait more fun.

Mike, actually the head magnifier I got for this great price has more
goodies than the one pictured on the site you sent. It has a light on
either side and a small round magnifier that can flip over top for close
viewing. But, that one does nto look bad for the money.
