The Post Office does not like the clear transparent slick plastic envelopes.
They told me that. I am not going to use them again. It just takes me a
while to jump when they say jump.

Hi all,
I have participated in 4 new year's post card exchanges.
The postcard exchange is unique and inviting for new people because its perameters are broad.
Receiving postcards as they come even a year late are enjoyed for the brightness and surprize they are.
It has been a long standing exchange and I hope it continues as it is.

Hello Patti,

Well, a book may be scheduled into my next lifetime ... or maybe the
one after that. And I have decided to stop "should-ing" myself to
death. Soooo, maybe I am better off just sending bits and pieces now
to those who want them !!!!

But for sure ... IF I ever publish a book, I will let you and
everyone else know about it.

Cheers .... Charles

This message is for Charles Morgan:

Hello Charles,

I am a new member of the Baren Forum and was thrilled
to see your posting about simple, effective presses.
As a long time intaglio printmaker who now finds
herself press-less, I'm open to any and all ideas for
affordable presses while I save $$ for more
traditional equipment. Who knows, maybe your
ideas/inventions will work even better!
Anyway, any information that you may wish to share
will be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards,

Hi,

About all this "Year Of" stuff... I agree with Oscar that it might not
even be a problem. Maybe we should some how take a poll... But, I
don't like the idea of having the discussion banned from this list,
and sent to After 5.... My understanding was that After 5 was supposed
to be for topics that don't relate to printmaking and our exchanges. I
don't subscribe to it, but I do want to be kept up to date on this
issue, and be able to pipe in on the discussion if I feel like my
words would be helpful. Is After 5 a social forum for all the friends
here at Baren, or it is a forum for all the debates that don't quickly
get solved on this list? I am scared of signing up because it is hard
for me to keep up with this list, and I will only get more behind if I
am signed up for both lists.

Thanks,
Angee

Hi Mark,
I used to use those Windsor and Newton brilliant watercolours all the
time, as an illustrator. They're great for artwork for publication but
the only thing I'd have against them for artwork for the walls, is the
fugitive nature of some of the colours. Years ago I painted some
watercolours with them and some colours have faded more than 'ordinary'
watercolours. I don't use them now for work to be framed, and for my
illustration work I use a computer these days.
Hope this helps,
Best wishes

Hi Angee,

After 5 is a fine place to be in addition to the main list, and doesn't have
anything like the volume of traffic you'll see here. Keeping up oughtn't to be
a problem. It does touch upon printmaking when it wants to! I've been there a
few months and have yet to see any wrangling there.

all the best,

Send Message: To this poster

Just a short note to list members about service glitches during the
past 24 hours.

If you have been keeping track, you may have noticed that some numbers
were skipped in the sequence of [Baren] messages yesterday. I've been
in touch with the people in the 'back room' at the web hosting company
and received this communication from them just now:
> Further to your email this morning we have investigated and
> found that there were indeed problems with the mailing list
> service that caused skipping of numbers, delays in delivery of
> messages and also the possibility that messages sent to mailing
> lists did not get delivered. Please accept our apologies for this
> outage.

At this point I don't know if any messages actually were missed, or
whether it was just a numbering problem. If you sent something and it
didn't go through, please try again. If you think you missed receiving
some messages, then check with the archives later on to catch up (after
archivist Gayle has had a chance to get things in order):
http://www.barenforum.org/archives/vol39/vol39.html

Apologies for this problem; our hosting company has been extremely
reliable over the years, but nobody bats a thousand!

Subject: [Baren 33366] Re: New Year Print Exchanges.
Send Message: To this poster

As a relative new comer to Baren and Print Exchanges I've read all the posts regarding this subject with the advantage of a distant perspective, so I hope you won't mind a couple of observations.

Although the cards take time, effort and expense to produce and mail, they are just greetings cards. It would be really nice to get a card in return for one sent, but sometimes it won't happen. I think that if that is a problem for you, then either don't sign up, or just privately send out cards to those people who you want to send cards to.

It's not really an exchange, and probably shouldn't be called that. The list should just be made up of people who would like to produce a card, but don't expect one in return. More an expression of intent rather than a commitment.

I also think that with the full lives we all lead these days that having the shadow of a print to produce for a new year that ended 2 or 3 years ago over them is a bit hard. I realise that maybe they should have thought about whether they should have signed up in the first place, but I think an print amnesty should be introduced, just to draw a line under this spiralling problem, and draw up some fresh guidelines.

New year cards are supposed to be sent out in the new year, not a year or more later. Doesn't it all just create stress and pressure for everyone; senders and receivers. I thought it was supposed to be a bit of fun.

I would suggest that all those with Dog prints and before that are still not printed and posted should (if they wish) be released of the pressure to produce them (a Print Amnesty). Outstanding Pigs can be produced throughout this year, with a cut-off date of perhaps 1st November when any obligations to print pigs would be removed, and when a list be gathered from members of "an expression of intent" that they would like to produce cards for the Year of the Rat but don't mind if they don't receive the same number of prints they send out.

(A second "Pay as You Go" list could be made up of those who would like to be involved and produce cards but will only send out on receipt of a card, or these people could just privately send cards out to their own choice of members.)

The Year of the Rat card production and sending obligation would expire on 1st November 2008, and so on.

Regarding posting, when I'm on holiday, if I send a postcard I put it in an envelope. It's then treated like a letter and slips through the system quicker. Also I've found that because envelopes are machine read, try to avoid coloured envelopes that reduce the contrast between the envelope and your written address. Ideally a white envelope with clear black lettering. In this instance things work more smoothly working with the system.

I'm just throwing ideas into the pot. I have no vested interests, but would like the New Year cards to continue because they reflect the great creativity among Baren members and it'd be sad to see this aspect fall apart, but it must be balanced with some fairness and understanding of people's other commitments and not put people under years of obligation to produce work for greetings long since passed. It's supposed to be fun.

Kindest regards

Mark.
