David,

Thick European paper takes great to being dampened. I usually soak it
for 30 minutes to 2 hours to get most the sizing out, then put it
between a few sheets of blotters, and either use my hand or a rolling
pin to help the blotters leave the paper evenly dampened. Or you can
you your sink/bathtub and towels, of coarse... Good luck printing!

David,
Yes, Japanese prints are always done on dampened paper. It is dampened
differently, however. It is not submerged in a tray of water, but
rather the water is painted onto alternating sheets, stacked, and left
for several hours in a plastic bag. Generally it is done the night
before you are going to print.

Hi card makers et al-
A Chinese student told me yesterday that 2007 is the year of
the "GOLDEN" BOAR which comes very 60 years - does this ring a bell
with anyone else???
Thanks to all for the lovely animals arriving daily - the New Year
celebration lasts until March 4th and I hope to have my greeting on
it's way soon.
cheers

Annie and Sharri,

Thanks for the nice comments. The plate is flexible. I attach the
polystyrene tiles to the mylar with an industrial strength clear double sided tape. The
plus side is I can see through it so registration is less of a problem. I
started off as a traditional etcher, laying the paper on the plate to print.
For these the plate is over the paper. I do print by hand with a baren. I'm
using it completely upside down though by pressing on the plate but it seems to
work. I have a little too much mad scientist in me do things traditionally.
However whenever I look at traditional woodblock prints, they take my breath
away. Definitely my favorite things to look at. Wish I had the discipline to
make them.
