Terry,

Transferring the image is a key skill. If the main elements are regular - as in an architectural subject - I work freehand, perhaps checking key ratios by measuring. Otherwise, I fall back to the traditional method of "squaring up". It takes time but I find it very effective.

This image shows a block where the central portion has been squared to allow me to make a reduced drawing of a pair of owls:

Of course the fun starts when one reduces and reverses at the same time!
