My Italian is getting very rusty. However, some of it did surface in Spain when I found myself starting sentences in Spanish and ending them in Italian. I'll stick to French.

Some Italian terms:

endgrain woodblock - legno di testa
sidegrain woodblock- legno di filo
gravers include bulini and ciapola
gouges - sgorbie
engraving (the process) - incisione
inking - inchostratura
burnishing - stampaggio
woodblock - matrice di legno
engraving (the work) - xilografia stampata

Thanks Andy! It's getting to be quite a phrasebook... makes me wonder,
wouldn't it be nifty to make a multi-language dictionary for
printmakers? That way, wherever you go, you'll have the right phrases to
hand. I can probably help with the Greek!

RE: Sharri's message (below). Graphic sells Graphic Gelled Medium, which
is what they call a blown linseed oil. It's a bodied linseed oil with
lots of air blown into it to gel it, or give it bulk. Because of the
quantity of air, and the fact that most inks dry by oxidation, it will
accelerate the drying process somewhat. Driers, by the way, are
reasonably safe, but I tend to share Sharri's concerns in part. Driers
are finicky, and while a little bit will help an ink to dry, a little
bit more will cause it to dry...oh, yeah, it won't dry!

The print studio in Florence is something Reparata, if I remember

Ha! What an image that conjurs up. Never used the dryer -- don't think we
have it in the lab. We're never in any hurry to dry anything, I guess. But
we use Miracle Gel a lot, mostly for viscosity prints, so one ink can lay
over another like a watercolor. I depend on it. Tho one student was quite
fond of pastels, so much so we called one color Ishtar Pink. ;->

Hi Louise,

Yes, one at a time on the blog. First you click on the "image" thing
then you can select "pop-up" or "imbed" for the image. If they are
less than 325 pixels you can click on imbed. IF bigger than that -
you'll want to click on "pop-up" as it generates a "thumbnail" for the
page & when you click on it, a bigger copy comes up. Click on upload
to get the image on the baren site. Then copy & paste the gobbledygook
that comes up onto your "new entry" copy. When you get it all done the
way you want = select "publish" & then "save" at the bottom of the page
& it will put everything up there. I know, it seems complicated at
first - but it is pretty easy once you get it
figured out. Any problems, let me know.

David, a multi-language dictionary for printmakers is a great idea
considering that Baren Forum is an International group. Anybody else think
so?...
