Sounds fun! The only time I ever worked with silk screen was as a sign
painter, but I've always loved those big swaths of smooth matte silkscreen
color. I realize now as I think about it that sometimes I'm trying to get
that look with woodblock. Lots of paste and several passes can yield a
lovely large area of color in moku hanga.

I too am interested in combining other forms of printmaking with woodblock.
I'm going to take a workshop this weekend on monoprinting without a press
and I also want to find out more about drypoint, as I think it would work
well with woodblock. Has anybody else mixed media in prints that are mostly
relief prints? Anybody mixed media with moku hanga? I'd be interested in
hearing your experiences.

I like the idea of miniature as well, 3x3" would be quite a challenge!

I bought one of these a few years ago. Came with a galvanized steel bed and
one thick felt blanket. It needs a bit of fiddling ...

Lubricate the bearings well with good oil and run the bed under pressure
back and forth 100-200 times ... this should break-in the bearings and help
prevent blanket creep. For catchers, add a couple of layers of cheap felt
from the fabric store ... I also use a sheet of soft plastic sheet sold as
plastic tablecloth from the fabric store ... put the plastic between the
catchers and the thick felt ... keeps moisture and sizing from getting to
the thick felt. You will need a way to clamp it down. I cut 4 small pieces
of angle iron and bolted them to the sides of the press ... then screwed
them down to a good chunk of plywood ... then use C-clamps to clamp the
whole thing down to a counter or table. I also found the crank handle
tended to slip. I loosened the bolt and took the handle off the shaft. Then
filed a flat spot on the shaft where the bolt made contact ... reassembled
the handle, and no more slip.

For a cheap, useable, easily portable press, it works all right within its
limitations.

Cheers ...... Charles

Hi,
I've had good luck mixing collographs with woodblock . It gives the print a
tremendous amount of depth.

hi everyone
after i read Angees question i was wondering about my nude. most of the blocks are linoleum etching and the "key" block is carved. a while back there was some discussion about water based block printing using a resist which is more like lithography in process. I guess my point is or question is... is it the material used as the block or is it printing in relief or at least one of these or both that make it a block print. im so confused. is a relief etching on zinc out or a plaster relief engraving?

I kinda like the idea of a square shape too. 3 x 3 would be small. Whew, but
I'm up for it.

5 x 5?

I am interested in taking a one or two week workshop next summer on traditional or non- traditional blockprinting. I have no idea where to start looking (The only place I know is Penland, quite pricey). I am a school teacher, so total cost, including housing, is an issue. I appreciate any suggestions you might have.

I've got some akua color monoprint inks, and have played around with
combining them with block prints. I did a series of Cypress prints
that started out as a regular multi-block print, but I decided after
printing the first color that I wasn't really happy with it. So
rather than waste all those prints I printed over them using the
monoprint inks brushed onto a plexiglass surface and then transfered
to the paper using a baren. Some of them turned out really painterly,
and some of them were a mess, but all were fun.

I'd like to try the experiment again, but reversing the order, so the
block is printed over the monotype inks. It would take a bit more
planning, but I think the final image might have more punch.

Subject: [Baren 31225] Cairn update
Send Message: To this poster

I have had a couple of queries lately about The Great Baren Cairn project.
After a slight delay, the project continues. Wood should be here any day now
and I will dedicate myself to cutting and mailing. Complete details here:
http://1000woodcuts.com/projects/cairn/index.html

Some clarification regarding the theme, please read carefully on the
website. The image does not have to be a "picture" of a Cairn. The entire
project will be a Cairn, which can be very crudely defined as a rock pile
made up of individual contributions. The project symbolizes or is an analogy
for Baren itself, a big thing made up of little member contributions stacked
together. Participants in the Cairn project should think of their "rock"
(image) as their contribution to the Cairn (Baren).
In a real cairn, passersby leave a stone for many reasons, some place it as
a marker for others to follow, some simply to say: "I was here"

Alternative interpretations of the Cairn theme, can be thought as: what do I
contribute to Baren? what have I contributed to Baren in the past? what is
my role in Baren? who am I within Baren? Or: this is what I leave for Baren;
this is who I am; come this way (do things my way); I was here; my
footprint; my piece...

Everyone can interpret the theme as they wish, loosely or tightly, literally
or marginally. Discussion along those lines is encouraged, of course.

Maria
