Subject: [Baren 31008] Festival Logo, Part Woodcut, Part Photoshop

Thought Bareners might like to see this finished design. This logo
is being seen everywhere around this area these days. I designed it
using both woodcut and Photoshop techniques. The raccoon is the
woodcut part (but with the original woodcut scanned in and resized),
and the outer circle with lettering and musical notes is the part of
the design made exclusively with Photoshop. This logo has been made
as small as an inch and large enough to go on the tee shirts the
festival will be selling. It will be on a large banner at the
festival, and has been on websites and in newspapers. It's been a
lot of work, and fun, too.

This link is on Burton's highly controversial blog written by a
local, outspoken gun store owner, but he gets as many as 20,000 hits
a day, so we are hoping it will help bring people out to the festival.

Welcome Preston.

I know one of your colleagues, Rob McColl. I had had some contact with him
over the last year and then accidentally ran into him at MFA in Boston
during the CAA conference in February. The relevance for Baren is that we
were actually looking at an exhibition that consisted of a huge number of
prints from the MFA collection.

Just put up another page in the ongoing series that shows the progress
of this year's scroll project.

That page is a sequence of stills taken from my webcam, and at the
bottom of the sequence is a link to a separate page containing a video
of the complete three-hour carving session - compressed into one minute
50 seconds!

But the reason I'm posting this now is to let you know that during the
session I sort of screwed up at one point, and after making the video,
I realized that I hadn't deleted the 'error'. So, just to have some
fun, I'm making it into a contest ... find Dave's screwup!

I'll send one of my postcard-size prints to each of the first five
people who can find it!

Subject: [Baren 31012] Question about using acrylic paints

Hi all,

For several years now, in order to avoid printing inks, I've tried
using acrylic paints with my block prints. I've had a little
success, depending on what kind of paper I used. The main problem is
that the paints are not sticky enough, I think.

I'm wondering, does anyone else use acrylics to print with? And if
so, do you add anything to them....maybe a medium, thickener,
retarder, etc.??

I like using the paints because when they're dry, I can paint over
them, do washes, etc. unlike the water-based inks.

Using oil based inks is out of the question for me because of allergies.

Thanks for any tips!
