Thanks so much to everyone who offered themes for Exchange #29 (oban
size) which opens for sign-up April 1 -- all GREAT ideas, I think!

I'm travelling again all next week so I am anxious to wrap up our
theme for exchange #29 by tomorrow (Friday) morning in order to be
ready for sign-up the morning of April 1 (I return to KC the evening
of March 30)...

Here's a brief recap of discussion (I think I've got this right):

1 vote for "Printmaking" (John Center)
1 vote for "The landscape" (Sharri LaPierre)
1 vote for "Transportation" (Connie Pierson)
1 vote for "World cultures" (Renee Ugrin)
2 votes for "Extreme facial expressions" (Robert Viana, Dan Dew)
2 votes for "Sea creatures" (Bea Gold, Marilynn Smith)
4 votes for "Comics" (Barbara Mason, Gayle Wohlken, Doug Haug, Sarah Hauser)
5 votes for "Favorite cause" (Marilynn Smith, Dan Dew, Carol Lyons,
Linda K, Maria Arango)
8 votes for "The nude" (Darrell Madis, Connie Pierson, Bridget Pilip,
Tom Kristenson, Julie Sparks, Furry Press, Ellen Shipley, Hanna Platt)

As of today, "The Nude" has been the most popular theme suggested
with eight votes, followed by "My Favorite Cause" with five and
"Comics and Cartoons" with four. I'm leaving discussion open until
this time tomorrow (Friday), so if you have any preference, feel free
to place your vote for more than one theme if you like and I'll count
them all up (but you can't vote ten times for one theme or anything)
tomorrow morning! Let's limit your votes to the TOP THREE now:

"The Nude"
"Favorite Cause"
"Comics and Cartoons"

I look forward to receiving your additional 'votes' over the next 24 hours!

I don't think we're afraid of stating our views. I think perhaps we are leary of offending each other with opposing views on some subjects. No one wants hard feelings.

And this is probably a nerdy question...I'm doubtful that I will be able to
participate in this exchange. But can I vote?

EVERYbody can vote! But probably best to vote only if you feel you
might participate.

Mike count me in for the 'Nude'.....we did do a Nude calendar back in 2003
but obviously only 12 people got to participate in that...we also did the
Shunga exchange that had plenty of nudes....but there has not been an
official 'Nude' exchange yet....me thinks...

Sharri writes:
"Printmakers have notoriously been outspoken for social justice, human
rights and many
other righteous causes."

So right...I love looking and collecting prints for their inherent beauty
and also for their fine craftsmanship...

but take one look at the work of Kathe Kollwitz:
http://images.google.com/images?svnum=10&hl=en&lr=&q=kathe+kollwitz

or the work of Fritz Eichenberg:
http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&lr=&q=fritz%20eichenberg&sa=N&tab=wi

All kinds of emotions come over me when I look at these images...how I
admire their ability to reach deep and capture the human soul, the
suffering within us and at the same time the love we share for one another
as human beings. There are many of us here capable of such work...as an
example...a few years back I fell in love with Maria Arango's work for
exactly these same reasons...take a good look at her "Los Suplicantes",
"Maze", "Uprooted" and "Lightseekers"...you can feel her passion for
making a strong statement in wood. For the same reasons I admire the work
of Tyrus Clutter, Dan Dew, Jean Womack, Mike Lyon, Horacio Neto and many
other bareners.

We live in a modern techno-age were the nightly News are filled with
graphic stories of everyday tragedy, murder, terrorism, natural disasters,
worldwide-spreading-disease, etc....to the point that we sometimes
assimilate these horrors without much thought or even a single outspoken
word. Then we get on our super-pc's with our super-fast connections and in
a split second we are connected to a global network capable of bombarding
us with yet more horrific information. It is a blessing to be able to go
out to my studio, play with pieces of wood and paper and get away from all
of it, being at peace even if for just a short while.

First, my butt is now completely flat from sitting at my puter for two
weeks, but I have succeeded in updating 99.8% of my website which was in
dire need of a spiff-up. I have some projects yet in mind to make it a
better resource, but we'll leave that for now. Anyhoot, I would like to
especially turn your attention to these pages:
http://1000woodcuts.com/studio/method.html
Any contributions will be greatly appreciated by printmakers all over the
worl--galaxy! and beyond...

Second, regarding the Great Baren Cairn:
our pile of rocks is now 57 strong, don't be left out!
I would especially like to encourage our world members to participate. Don't
worry about cost and mailing and silly things like that; I'll get the blocks
and prints to you. Many of our members contribute generously so that there's
plenty of budget to go around. I am also applying for a Nevada Arts Council
Jackpot grant which may help defray some of the costs of the project.
So once more, here is the info again and link to sign up:
----------------------------------------------------
THE THEME of this MCPP (Monumental Collaborative Puzzle Print) is "The
Cairn", as tightly or loosely interpreted as each participant wishes. Mostly
described as a "pile of rocks", in my view Baren is much like a Cairn, with
all sorts of people coming and going and
everyone leaving their little stone as a marker, footprint, simple "I was
here", bit of guidance, pebble of wisdom, and an infinite etcetera. For much
more on the diverse nature and history of cairns, here is the ever helpful
Wiki entry:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cairn
PARTICIPANTS CAN SIGN UP through a form, rather than in an email, so I can
quickly and almost automatically insert their information in a database.
Sign up began last week and will end sometime when new sign ups dry up,
about three weeks from now:

PS I vote for nude causes
