Rob, I like my ball bearing Baren from the Baren mall. It takes good pressure, gives me good results and the best part is it never has to be recovered!! I think for fine details you just do not put heavy pressure on and it should print them just fine.

Hello Sherri,

I am trying to make plans for the summit. Which airport is the best to fly
into for the summit. If there is more than one choice let me know. I will
be renting a car, so distance won't be a big deal.

Thanks,

Is there any way we can flash our barens and get passes to the SouthernGraphicCouncil conference?

Hi folks. Robert Viana previously posted about an opportunity at Agora Gallery. Just a couple of things:

Please note that they do not insure the artwork while in the gallery. If you're ok with that, no problem, just something to be aware of. Unfortunately quite a number of galleries work this way these days.

also, the gallery is known as a "vanity gallery" and so is not taken seriously by more upscale galleries. Again, if that doesn't matter to you, not a problem, but just thought I'd let you know.

I have not visited either of their current spaces (they used to be on Broadway, I believe) so I have no report on that but if I have a chance to check them out sometime I'll let you know and give you my two cents.

Robert, I have several barens which I really like. I'm not sure if you're printing hanga-style, but my comments are regarding use for hanga printing. I'm sure others would have comments which would apply if you are doing western-style printing.

One that I have is called a "Murasaki Baren" which you can get from Mcclain's, $130
http://www.imcclains.com/catalog/baren/index.html#murasaki

they have one for more detail and one for larger areas. I have the one for finer detail. I use this for smaller areas and for outline blocks, etc. and it works very well. The toughest part of this is changing the bamboo sheath cover. !

I actually have two ball bearing barens (one for larger areas and one for finer areas, the more ball bearings it has, the better it is for fine printing). Many of my prints are either large or incorporate large flat areas. The ball bearing barens are GREAT for both of these uses. Even if you're making prints of a rather smaller size, if you have large flat areas to print, a ball bearing baren could be useful. You can get a nice smooth printing with not too much effort, so you can save your wrist and arm some stress too. Also, you don't have to change the covering, which is a plus! I got my ball bearing barens also from Mcclain's, and they have both been great and have put up with a lot of fierce printing (they are a bit pricey though). others on this list have gotten ball bearing barens from the baren mall, so perhaps someone can comment on those.

If you want to get really fancy, April and others have the serious Japanese hon baren, which costs around $640 and up. This is a super baren if you can afford it.

enjoy!
