Mike,
I use a piece of mat board between the roller and the paper and block...but I have not tried it for hanga but have used other waterbased inks this way. And of course no blankets.

Thanks for thinking of me, Barbara, but a mat board tympan wouldn't
be very workable for my big stuff -- first, the mat board absorbs
moisture from the paper which I don't want -- not only sucks moisture
from the paper, but also becomes damp and deformed itself -- not
good! Also I'd require a 48x96" tympan sheet (regardless what
material) to be placed on and off the press with each impression --
without shifting the paper and without taking too long -- and I'd
have to provide a clean place to put it between impressions --
SOoooo.... if I can get away with it, I'll just stick to the bare
roller... Maybe I'll try spreading a little camellia oil on it and
see whether that improves the offsetting from the roller?

Duh! I can't believe that I never even thought about blankets causing the
problem in relief printing! Of course they would push ink into places where
I don't want it to be. Gee, using a tympan I can now look forward to
(hopefully! ;-) cleaner prints!! Yay!

Well, didn't mean to imply blankets are totally evil! :-)
As Barbara pointed out, the pusher blanket comes in handy to preserve the
roller. Also, they are handy in building up the tympan assembly for very
uneven or thin blocks or when some embossing is desired. Just make sure that
the surface _directly_ above the block-paper is a hard surface.

Happy clean prints,
Maria

Printing problem when my blocks are even I like to use a sheet of
plex-glass between the paper and the roller with out the plexi the paper may move
when the press roller goes over the block. If the block is un even I put
make ready on the plexi glass or under the block depending on what the problem
is.

Yes...wowie..wow...I got my exchange #26 prints on Sunday. I cheated
since I live less than a mile from John Center I drove over and pick them
up. First
look at home I thought to myself...uhmmm...some of these prints could fit
right in on a Shunga #2 exchange ????

Ha., ha.....let me explain myself...there is an image of a naked
prepubescent girl sitting on a bear's lap, there is another image of a man
groping the breast of a woman, there is one of a nude man sleeping with a
mysterious arm reaching over, another of a beautiful nude woman in a most
erotic pose .....darn, there is even one of kissing turtles !!!! ;-)

All very well done and very creative...congratulations to all and to John
Center for adding on the hand printed colophon and the extra prints !!!!
This one engraving John sent in of an Indian chief is beautifully done as
well as the buffalo images he contributed...

thanks.......Julio Rodriguez (Skokie, Illinois)

Subject: [Baren 30041] Slide Lecture including Woodblock Prints
Send Message: To this poster

Hi,
On Saturday I will be giving a slide lecture including woodcuts at the
Nippon Community Center, Hartsdale, New York.
I have a beautiful slide of the Maria's Picture Puzzle and will explain it
and tell them about Baren. Also have our brochures for them to take. ..They
will surely appreciate what Dave said, "If you like doing something, isn't
it beter if it takes a long time?"

The slide lecture will be a survey of my art over the decades, won't say how
many! --watercolors, monotypes, decalcomania, loopomania and for the last 7
years woodblock prints. I've done slide lectures in the past , but for
entirely different groups. This is for the large Japanese community in this
area. Interesting...

If anyone of you can come, great. Please get in touch and I'll give
directions.

Back to organizing slides and getting thoughts together. It's time for
another art motto:
KISS--Keep it simple stupid!

Thanks all for sharing about printing woodblock on a press.

Sharri, do you happen to know the name of the Japanese paper you used from McClain's?

just curious.

best wishes
