As for moistening paper, I use both a sprayer (it is plastic, says "airmist"
on it and says it's distributed by JAS International, I purchased it from
Dieu Donne Papermill) and a large brush. First I spray the water on the back
of the paper, and then brush it so the water is spread evenly over the paper.
I believe I saw one of my woodblock teachers do this but I'm not sure.
Anyway, it works well!

Hello Bareners,

I have a question about methyl cellulose--or, well, actually wallpaper paste
that I believe is methyl cellulose. (It mixes with cold water.) I have mixed
it up and after an hour or so, it is smooth and a nice thin gel, and seems
to work well. (I was using wheat paste before this.) But by the next day,
the gel seems to be gone--its a watery consistency. Does anyone know what
is going on here?

yes. I think I use the same or similar product. At room temperature or warmer it almost completely becomes useless after a day or so. I mix a batch and then let it sit in the fridge over night, have a mighty printing setion and then put it back in the fridge. I do this for a few days and then make another batch. It will remain jelly like but it is always better for me to use a fresh batch. I make up small amounts at a time. 3 parts powder to 1 part water. (usually table spoons) I use this powder called takeban or takebon, something or other.

Thanks for the many suggestions I received for different atomisers/sprayers/kirifuki. On Mike's advice I tried a cheap 1 litre plastic pressurised garden sprayer, I have also tried a small pump up aerosol. Both of these deliver a nice mist, but spit an initial gob of water. The device I am probably after is the Kuramata sprayer. At $150 USD plus postage it is about 50 times more expensive than the plastic equivalent and it too may spit at first.

I should explain that I am wanting a perfect mist for an "untraditional" use. I am aiming to liquefy water-soluble crayon on glass, slightly off the topic for this forum. However, a mist sprayer is an excellent tool for quickly bringing a stack of paper to life and ready to print. It stands to reason that misting each sheet will produce faster results than brushing every third or fourth print and waiting for moisture to soak through. I know haste is not an aim in itself, but sometimes it's nice to be able to cut the paper and start printing within the hour.

The airmist by JAS international doesn't give you that initial blob. You do
have to pump it regularly while using it to maintain the pressure, but as
long as you do, it sprays evenly.
