Thanks Carol. I just read about using linseed oil today in the Forum
Archives, and plan on using it on the shina blocks I got in the mail a few
days ago from McClains. Didn't know that my oil painting materials would
help me out in this ...

Hi Michael.

I occasionally engrave fine crosshatched lines and use
a lozenge tool. I understand that this is the tool
used by the Dalziels et al used but I suppose one can
never be sure. There are some 19th Century engraving
manuals about and they may provide the answer. Looking
at Simon Brett's work is a fine idea - there is no
better all-round engraver working in the world today
(IMHO).

I really do appreciate the link. I've heard of a video by Woodman (is that
one good?) but haven't heard about the Scholes video at all. If I did get
it, it might save me from sending out dumb or redundant messages here ...

Thanks so much. I've done a lot of searching/researching the subject on
the web, but it's great to know that there's material out there that I've
not exhausted yet. Much appreciated.

Wonderful. I'm familiar with your web pages, and have gotten some good
ideas from them. Thanks much for the response.

What is a "Lozenge" tool, Andy? I'm unfamiliar with the name.

Sarah,

Unless I am missing something I was the one that posted a picture of a
scratch art tool in my blog. I bought mine about five years ago and
don't think it is even available anymore. When a number of fellow
printmakers showed interests in it I poked around online looking for
one with no luck. Sorry.

I'm sure Andy will give you a much better answer, but here is a page with
a photo of the tool, a drawing of the tip (diamond shaped), and a short
description of how it's used.
