I proofed my print today. I used Methyl cellulose for the first time. I
mixed it to a fairly loose consistency. As I worked with it it turned to a
jelly consistency. What should I do with this??? Should it sit and than be
mixed adding more water? Should it be the thin consistency that I have
always used with the rice paste????

An opening reception and special presentation by Walla Walla artist Keiko Hara will be held Friday, Oct. 7, starting at 5:30 p.m.
at the Main Gallery of the Lewis-Clark State College Center for Arts & History, located at 415 Main St. in Lewiston.

Verse from Sea (2003), a portfolio of 12 small woodblock prints, brings to mind sand, clouds, and the movement of water
through swirling lines of color and dark outlines drawn over feathery, plantlike forms and cottony orbs. Verse Imbuing: Seasons 1-4 (2003)
consisted of four painted doors intended to represent the seasons and an ambient sound-track of beach sounds.

Send Message: To this poster

Hello All,

I have been using some cheap tools I got at Michaels, a five tool set
that cost around $7.00, and they just aren't working out, so I am
considering an upgrade. Does anyone has used either the Michi or the
Shimizu traditional tools available in the Baren Mall have any
preferences for one or the other? It is hard to tell from the pictures
if there are any significant differences between the two.

I'm also looking at the Dockyard Mirco Tool Sets at Woodcraft for, among
other things, carving seals in some small end grain maple blocks I have
laying around. The basic set comes in three widths: 1.5 mm, 2.0 mm, and
3.0 mm. Any recommendations as to which width might be the most useful?

Thanks,
David

I have no experience with the tools from baren amll. They are no doubt
excellent. but they are also quite expensive. If you have access to
Lee Valley, they have a line of Japanese tools which are very good and
under $30.00 for a set. They can also be bought individually. They can
be kept quite sharp with honing, and they last a long time before the
shape of the blade begins to change too radically. I've been using them
for the past four years--and have made a fair number of blocks--and find
them extremely good. The average indivudually purchased tool is between
$6 and $7 CDN, so less in U.S. funds.

I should add that I use Baltic Birch plywood and so don't know how these
tools would behave on harder woods.

How brave of Gillyin Gatto and John Center to send *actual postcards*! They
arrived safe and sound and none the worse for wear. But boy that was gutsy!

I was on the board of Crow's Shadow Art Institute on the Umatilla Indian Reservation in Oregon with Keiko, she is such a wonderful person and her work is amazing. If anyone has an opportunity to see this show I would recommend it. Keiko is Japanese but speaks very good English and is a lot of fun to know. I haven't seen her in awhile, but think of her fondly. The last show I saw of hers was an installation of printing on fabric that you sort of walked through, like a visual transparent forest. It was stunning.
Best to all,
Barbara
