Subject: [Baren 29707] How Did You Discover Woodblock Printmaking
Send Message: To this poster

Hi Bareners,

I just signed up for exchange #28. At the end of last summer I had to
drop out of #26 because of other commitments and haven't been making
prints for at least 9 months now. Like many people I run on several
tracks, one of them is Internet and new media. Early this summer I
learned that one of my Internet projects would be exhibited in February
2006 in the Whitney Museum's Artport series. I had already been just
about working full time on it but at that point I put everything else
aside. I've posted a small description of the project on my blog:
http://room535.blogspot.com/. In any event, I am finally able to return
to printmaking and had been thinking about where I'd go from where I'd
left off, seemingly so long ago. So, when Mike announced exchange 28 I
took it as a sign.

During this hiatus of mine from baren there's been a tremendous upsurge
in membership, so I thought that the "How did you discover printmaking
thread" was a great opportunity for people to introduce and re-introduce
themselves to the list. But they also turned up very interesting and
often affecting results. One observation that particularly caught my
attention was Jean Womack's statement that she was drawn to printmaking
because doing things in multiples gave them an enhanced sense of
reality. This appealed to the existentialist in me. And Julio's
account of the course he took from an early interest in art through
violin-making to printmaking struck a particular note. Many of the
people who wrote came to art and/or printmaking as adults, or at least
after their formal education was over. Which was my own case.

Having spent my adolescence eating and breathing art in New York City,
where I was so lucky to live, I ended up as an academic and writer who
never quite relinquished up the secret desire to be an artist. But it
seemed so out of the question. As a kind of substitute, I began putting
together a small poetry press, with my wife, on the University of
Manitoba campus, where we printed books in letterpress using hand
techniques. The books were illustrated with relief prints. One summer,
I decided to try making a block of my own. It was a rather innocuous
thing carved into a large piece of cherry plank for which I didn't
really have proper tools. I printed it using sumi ink. I began making
prints using Japanese techniques which I picked up from reading. But I
was in fact very competent letterpress printer and soon began printing
on presses using oil-based inks.

Those first prints were the beginning of the end. Before 10 years had
passed I had reduced my teaching by half and was essentially a full-time
artist and left teaching altogether as soon as I was able. I stopped
making woodcuts and eventually found my place in conceptual/photo-based
work--which is the background to my interest in new media. But at a
certain point, woodblocks began to insinuate their way into my
photo-based work, like a neglected child that wanted its due
recognition. My work often involved computers, and before long
photoshop and the Internet replaced large (costly and physically taxing)
photo-based pieces. But the woodblocks remained and for the past half
dozen years I've worked just about exclusively making woodblock prints
and work for the Internet.

As those of you who've turned to art as adults well know, it's like the
dybbuk of Jewish mythology, a demon that enters one's body--once you
give it an opening it takes over and controls your life. Even if you
satisfy its demands, you may never be fully content, but you can't ever
be happy unless you do.

Greetings,
I just wondering when I might know if I made it onto the list to
participate in exchange # 28.

Just dying to know is all. I know it has barely been 24 hours since sign
ups have opened...sorry.

Hello,
This question is for the people behind the scenes of the barens website. I was wondering how come the images are not up for exchanges 23,24,25?
Thanks, Rob

Carol Wagner~

You are too sweet to send me one of your monkey prints! He has so much
movement, did I hear music when I released him from the envelope? Thank
so much! I sure love going to the post office these days.

Dear Judith,

Good luck! Please DO carefully review the exchange rules which are
shown on the sign-up page, especially the part about being "active"
on the forum -- then please post a note to baren@ml.asahi-net.or.jp
(you must have 'joined' baren in order to do this -- see
http://barenforum.org/subscribing/sub_forum.php ), at the very least,
please introduce yourself to the group and tell about your printmaking, etc.

Thanks!

Exchange #23 has been up for a LONG time at
http://barenforum.org/exchange/exchange_23/exchange_frame.html !

I received the images from #24 several weeks ago but not the colophon
or coordinator comments -- I'm unable to determine for sure which
printer goes with which print in most cases, as the filenames of the
images are generic (numbers) -- I sent coordinator Barbara Mason a
page with thumbnails of the images and the associated file names and
she has promised to get that information to me as soon as things calm
down for her after the holidays... Soon as she does I'll have the
gallery pages up!

#25 coordinator Diane Cutter has not yet sent me scans, comments, and
colophon from #25 -- Soon as she does I'll have the gallery pages up!

Doin' the best I can -- and SO SORRY for my unintentional post to the
forum about a new #28 participant a moment ago!

-- Mike

Hi, Mindy -- you are currently #6 in the 'holding pen' (since you are
a participant in #27)... Looks like the chances are that you'll wind
up near the top of the waiting list assuming half a dozen more
sign-ups between now and January 8th...

You can always check the sign-up page at
http://barenforum.org/exchange/exchange_sign-up.html but please be
aware that I MANUALLY enter the names on this page and so run from a
few minutes behind (at best) to several days behind...

This year I must be out of town and away from my computer from
January 4th through the 9th, so there will be NO updates during that
time -- please TRY to be patient -- I hope the suspense won't be too
awfully painful! :)

I imagine some where in the archives this is listed??? I have a jar
metallic fabric acrylic paint. If I wanted to use this printing a wood
block -- what would I do??? Do I need a medium and if so what!!!! Or is this
something I should not even consider??

Hi Mike,

we'll I am getting a good education regarding the exchange program,
that's good.

You know, I just didn't sign up for # 27, does that move me on the list
now? If I am understanding this correctly. ;) This is a good system to
have. #28 is my first for a formal exchange.

Thanks,

HI Marilyn,
This is something I do alot. If you are printing on fabric, and want to thin
the paint and not affect the hand of the fabric so much, you can use a
textile medium, my favorite is Golden GAC 900. Liquitex makes one also. If
it doesn't need to be thinned, just go for it as is. Any other kind of
acrylic medium would work, it's just that on fabric it keeps it from being
so plastic-y. Usually they say that you should heat set on fabric when you
use fabric paint, or textile medium. My experience is tha after about 24
hours drying (or more if you are in wet Oregon? or someplace like that) it
is pretty much permanent on fabric or paper.
Any other questions?

I was... er... Just testing to see whether you were
paying close attention, Mindy... Good job! You get an "A" (to my
own "F", I suppose... :-[)...

Anyway, right you are -- don't have a clue (as usual) what I might
have been thinking (if anything at all)... You are now (correctly, I
think) listed #21 in the exchange... You are so "IN", Mindy!

Woo hoo! I like the no theme theme. Since I am so new at this whole thang
anyhow!! If you saw how many times I read through both lists...you'd wonder
if I thought my name was really Carol, Carole or another.

"Hmm, is my name on this list? I just go through it for the third time."
LOL
Thanks, :)

#24 is my fault...the images are scanned finally (the prints were too big for my scanner so I had to farm out the scanning) and I need to send the text in...I had hoped to do it the day after Christmas, but family stuff just keeps draining my time. I will get it done as soon as I can and then it will be up.
Sorry, life is just crazy,
Best to all,

Like Barbara with the #24 exchange, I have had scanner problems and the holidays got in the way. The #25 exchange is almost finished now and will be sent off to Mike soon. I do apologize to the group.
