i've been stewing the last few days after annie's letter stating "that is at least the 3rd Year of the Dog print I know of with no dog in it.
I sincerely hope that this isn't really a trend!" because one of those prints without an actual dog was mine.

that statement felt really judgemental about something which is supposed to be an enjoyable trade.

i actually put alot of thought and work into my print and was really happy with the way it came out. i thought those who received it would like it. i had no idea that it might not meet someone else's standard of what a year of the dog print should be.

i actually laughed out loud when i got "upward facing dog" because it was so far out of what i had imagined, but to me that was a pleasant surprise... i loved it, not to mention that the work on the print was outstanding.

i appreciated mindy and kim's eloquent responses regarding the diversity of the exchange and rereading my letter i sound a little cranky, but i felt i needed to put my two cents in.

Brad...

I got your print and was totally charmed by it, as well as by Robert's... I am enjoying the 'free association' of dog. I wish I could be so inventive. Unfortunately, my plate is a dog... getting ready to print early next week.

Brad,

I didn't read Annie's comment as judgemental but ironical. As in "no dogs in the dog exchange" yet. Humorous. I too am anticipating my first actual dog just because I'm a dog fan. But I am equally enjoying the dog-esque cards as well. I think it will be very interesting to see what all we get. 8-] We're obviously a creative bunch.

Mindy, from my experience the new years cards seem to come in varying sizes.
Since there is no colophon, no coordinator, no case for them it seems that
postcard is the norm, but not heavily restricted. I agree about the open
editions. I have one I used this year to give out prints to special people
who wait on me all year long. The girls at Curves, all the employees at the
lodge and others who make my days better. It is nice to have just a few
blocks that are open so one can hand then out and be free of worry about how
many are printed. That is what I mean about the new years cards, it is a
really open and friendly little exchange. It is nice to have one like that,
no heavy pressure on time or size or edition numbers or what the image can
be. I loved getting the early ones and I will love getting the later ones.
It is fun to have them come in all through the year. Especially since I am
usually gone and never get to open even one before June anyways. Do not take
this to mean that I think all our exchanges should be such free form, we
need the rules for those.
Today we had visitors in our front yard, Trudy and Penny the wild turkeys
were by for some grain.

Hello everyone,
I am going to step up to the plate here and say a few things. I am now on my virtual soapbox.
I have been monitoring all the wonderful members comments about numbering editions and here are my thoughts.
I no longer number my prints. In any way shape or form. It is a false standard that the marketing industry or shall we say "their representatives have placed upon consumers to add an imaginary higher value to so called "limited editions." I know that this is not new news.
However my friends, I have heard a few mention that it is such a relief to not have to do this. Well my answer to that is, You DO NOT have to do it. If the galleries and customers depend on it and will not buy the works of art if they are not numbered, then they are buying your works of art for the wrong reason. Those customers that purchase the artworks for the simple fact that they find them beautiful or spellbinding are the customers I feel are more appreciative and a better clientele.
Don't get me wrong, I know we all need to make money. Infact, I depend on sales of my own artwork as part of my income, so I am not young and naive in this respect. I am not living in some fantasy world where I am an artist to the King and Queen. I slave to the mediums I work with and try to produce the best art I can for my own benefit. When others like it, that is just a bonus.
If more artist in the world would concentrate their own efforts on the work in hand than the work in the store or gallery to be, we would see a tremendous amount of truly inspiring artwork. Move torwards better quality artwork instead of a prettier signature and number.
Giclees are ruining the painting world. Virtually destroying it and making paintings worthless.
OUR TIME IS NOW! Hands on printmaking, old world meets new world techniques with a concentration on craft is the printmakers neo-renaissance. A resurgence of the once thought of "Diing art" and the simple love of a beautiful print for what it is. A beautiful print. Not a number in a catolog.
Having said this, I have a question to pose to you all.
How many of us have gone to goodwill or thrift stores and have seen original signed and numbered prints there being sold for pennies? I have see quite a lot in my time.
I believe that the artworks that were originally purchased by customers that fell in love with them for the beauty and treasure that they are would not let this happen. These, I hope are my customers. It is the people that buy them because they match the color of the counters in their bathrooms that later drop them off as if they are almost trash. A burden. Very sad.
I am not bashing anyone. Not the artist in you or the second hand stores of the world. I am simply saying make art because it is in you and part of what you are. Not because you have too.
Cheers, Rob

Roy asks...

"Is it for the whole exchange or for each submission? Is the author going
to
cut each name into a block backwards!? Would you need anything besides my
name? Or am I jumping the gun for exchange #27?"

Mike Lyon assigns a coordinator from within the exchange particpants to
receive, collate and mail the
print package to each participant. The coordinator for each exchange also
puts together a list of all the artists participating in the exchange with
the title of each print. This is sent along with the prints to each
participant.
The colophon could also include information about the print, technique,
theme or artist involved.
I say 'could' because the information is provided by each artist online
when they 'send' in the details
of their print. Some people just include name, location & title; others
provide more information about
their image or process. This information will also be displayed online in
the exchange gallery. Some exchange coordinators go all out and create
beautiful colophons with color thumbnails of each image or handmade cases.

Having worked with John before on the last exchange he coordinated (#19
Shunga), I think he is carving a block with each of the participants names
on it (yes, he is carving each name backwards !)(but only the names !) and
will be sending that along with the prints... that will be our colopphon
for #26...so we will actually be getting 'two' prints from John !!!!

There is lot of information on the exchange pages that Mike Lyon (Exchange
Manager) has put together which explains all the details and rules. You
can also purchase a case from the BarenMall. The links for entering the
info about your print can be found off the main exchange pages...for
exchange #26 it is:

Marilynn~

Thanks for this! I would love to see the print that you gave to your friends
and the gals from Curves! Do you have a link to it?

I am savoring each tiny decision I'm making for this exchange. I'm glad I
will be able to participate. I may sketch something this week end.
However, I did learn that next year is the year of the snake. I'm already
dreaming of that. (I'm not normally a snake kind of gal)

Had I signed on with this group earlier in the year, my dog might be done by
now!

It is strange to have such a craving for this carving art....I don't feel
that I'm gifted at the skill in the least. It's just that so many things
about this art form are appealing to me. I feel this drive to create it and
greed when receiving it. ;)

In a non creative way, it is much like chocolate and all the other Christmas
treats that are haunting me right now.

I am really sorry people read my message to be hypercritical. It wasn't
meant to be so. As someone who almost exclusively paints and prints animals,
primarily dogs, I am really interested in how others perceive and portray them. I
didn't intend to criticize those who interpret "dog" in a way different to
mine.

Please accept my apologies for hurting anyone. It was unintentional.
