I can take a picture of it and hope for the best:)

>>I was 14 when I stopped doing art. Long story.
>>But I played at art off and on for 30 years. I was directing "Ahmal and the Night Visitors" in Germany and on the opening night I was a nut case. There was a piece of straight-grain wood, 12x12, in the workshop and I picked up a screwdriver and started gouging out a simple head with hands. After about 15 minutes I forgot about the opera and began to look for paper. I found some thick off white cotton sheets that were about 30x 16.
>>No ink....I took bronze spraypaint and coated the block and pressed the paper to the block, rubbed it with my hand and pulled it. Wow!
>>I then mixed brown and silver spraypaint and printed the block with a piece of plastic, moved it over and reprinted it. It was sooo cool!
>>The opera was half done and I was barely aware of it.
>>I made 12 prints and ended up having 6 framed.
>>My niece still has the one I sent her 30 years later.
>>I sold 4 at the frame shop in Worms Germany and kept one.
>>I was 1989 before did another on, while working on a degree in printmaking at the U of O.

Still being new to our group, I just found the member's slide show of
work. I watched about fifteen of them, then had to scoot. But, I am
never without a total feeling of amazement when seeing Baren's work. How
fun.

Mike Lyon,
I just made it to your site the other day. Incredible, simply. Some of
those prints are like photos. (only better ;) Beautiful! Your press is
spectacular too. I don't think I mentioned my awe in that project. Great
work.

I love these stories about how we came to find printmaking! Keep sending
them!

Here's what my website says:

Dan was born in a lumber jack camp and began work at the
tender young age of 5. Every one saw immediately that he was a
"chip off the old block" so he began to whittle toothpicks for a living.

He soon was recognized as "a cut above " and began to travel in a
comedy road show cutting the fool with many famous people such as:

- Woody Allen
- The Chip & Dales
- Yule Gibbons
- The Oakridge boys
- Twiggy.

Dan began to branch out and worked for a side show barking out
peoples ages
and stumping them with tricky questions. Gouging out a career as a
real cut up,
began to go against his grain so he decided to put down roots and make
an impression in the up and coming print industry.

Mindy......many of us that attended the KC Summit got to meet Mike, tour
his studio/karate-dojo and spend time looking at his work. The volume of
work, the quality and the variety of techniques is incredible.

For a real in depth interview (circa 2003 ?) with Mike Lyon you can link

Thank you Julio~
I look forward to checking it out, and becoming more familiar with
everyone eles's work too.

I'm doing some YOTDog paper shopping this afternoon. I don't know just
what my image is going to be, but I know the colors I'll be using.
Silly? Who would do this? Who would choose the colors before choosing
the image?

Thanks again,
Mindy

Message posted from: Google News Update

Charleston artist Barrie Kaufman will teach students the art of printmaking at a free "Art Start" workshop from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the Cultural Center, State Capitol Complex, Charleston.

The workshop is open to students in grades one through four and is limited to 12 participants. Registration is required.

Printmaking has been Kaufman's primary medium for many years. Most of her work is large, woodblock prints with many colors printed on hand-made Japanese paper.

She has had many solo exhibitions including Sotheby's in Stockholm, Sweden, Kurts Bingham Gallery, Memphis, and the Art Store and Callen McJunkin Gallery, both in Charleston.

No experience is needed to participate in the workshop. All supplies are provided.

To make a reservation for a class contact Nancy Herholdt at 558-0220 x112 or email nancy.herholdt@wvculture.org
