'Rice Starch' and 'Methyl Cellulose' are both far superior to 'rice
flour', and although you CAN get the starch from rice flour it's not
worth the effort (IMHO)... Go to the archival materials section of
your local art supply store to buy rice starch or methyl cellulose in
dry powder form and prepare according to package directions, or order
by mail from a number of suppliers. Think of these as 'retardants'
and 'vehicles' for your pigments and you won't be far off the mark.

You can get fine (but more costly) results using prepared water
colors. 'Pigment suspensions' are easier and safer to use than dry
pigments (inhalation hazard with most dry pigments). Pure pigments
(dry pigment or pigment suspension) in water without paste tend to
produce a granular sort of texture when printed. Adding paste
smooths the printed color. 'Too much' paste prints your brush marks as well.

Sounds like you're off to a strong start just 'getting' the
registration working! Congratulations!

Jim,
this has been around a really long time and I use this process with kids a lot...but we use rubber fish! We get them from NASCO, I think they have an online catalog. It is so easy with the rubber fish...no smell and you just wash them off and print them again..there are about 10 different fish to chose from, also a stingray, a turtle and starfish. The turtle doesn't work very well, it is too thick. My favorite ink for this is the Monotype ink from Createx, it is watersoluble and good colors and washes right off the fish. Sumi paper works great for this, but we usually use newsprint due to cost and the amount of kids that make prints when we do art fairs.
Best to all,
Barbara

Good morning Robert and Charles

I would NOT use rice flour! Start by boiling the heck out of some
short grain white rice with lots of water. You'll get all the paste
you want. I run mine thru a strainer first and refrig. what i am not
using and it keeps and keeps.......... and cant get cheaper than a cup
of white rice! It is what was used in old time book binding.

Peace Love and Blessings

Oh, these are *wonderful*, Rob! Really nice to see work that is technically
and artistically good, but also captures the subject's personality and
charm...

Great print, Robert! And great that you are having fun! I don't know
about the TEKNOBOND powder -
but your print looks wonderful, so you may have found something new &
easy to use. I use methyl cellulose
& the main reason I like it - mice & bugs aren't attracted to it like
rice paste!

Would this stuff work for Hanga?

just curious, looks like it might without paste.

Shiva Signa-sein Casein Starter Set

Casein is made from soured skim milk. The curd is separated from the
whey, dried and cleaned. When the dried curd is powdered and mixed
with water and an ammonium compound, it creates a lovely binder for
artist's pigment. Shiva is one of the few manufacturers in the world
still making this time-honored painting medium. Caseins may be used
to successfully produce a painting with the transparency of a
watercolor, the smooth opaque of tempera and gouache, the heavily-
textured opaques of acrylics and oils, and everything in between. All
Shiva Casein Paints are chemically-pure pigments and are permanent to
light, gases, alkalis and acids. They may be applied on almost any
grease-free surface. Casein is fast drying, and while remaining water-
soluble in the short term eventually dries permanent to a hard, matte
finish which can be varnished.

6-Tube Set — Six 37 ml (1.25 oz) tubes, including Ivory Black,
Titanium White, Cadmium Yellow Light, Cadmium Red Extra Scarlet,
Shiva Green (Phthalo), and Ultramarine Blue Deep.

For those of us starting out with moku-hanga and thinking that the
traditional japanese process with it's rice paste, barens, etc. is too
demanding and not rewarding enough ($$$$)....here is a print to look
at....twenty-three color impressions .....check out the asking price !
This edition was actually printed by Yasuyuki Shigata under the
supervision of the artist. Click on the image to see the other works done
by Pace Prints like "Japanese Maple".
