I don't know about mass production but with a bed that size I bet Mike
could rent it and the studio to printmaking artists wanting to work
large....I mean very large.
A little advertising to the right group and I bet you have people from all
over interested in dropping by KC to use the press....

I remember seeing a photo of ex-barener Daniel Kelly printing some very
large images but he was using a large diameter sewage pipe filled with
water and helpers to get the printing done....

Mike's press for sure is going to be the 'mother' of all presses !!!!

Or, Julio... I have another inspiration...

Mike could outfit a semi and take the press all over the US, renting out press time in any number of cities or towns or hamlets... It could be a complete printmaking set-up in a semi. I was watching my husband watching a 'big trucks' program on TV last night... and if the animal rescue people out of Colorado can do it, Mike certainly can...

Daniel Kelly and I conversed quite a bit about that photo and the
large-press project while I was gathering ideas about producing larger
prints, and he's been incredibly generous and helpful! But with respect to
his pipe printing, although it made a fabulous photo, he says it didn't
actually work very well at all and he abandoned it in short order.

Daniel continues to do terrific work, IMHO, and shared his (good)
experiences printing moku-hanga on very large lightweight European
hot-press watercolor papers -- he said he particularly liked the way
bokashi prints on those. In recent years, most of his printing, collage,
and painting have been done on papers from India and similar low-cost
sources of supply.

Baren Summitt....

Next August is unbelievably busy for me, but I'm going to do my very best
to make it to the Summit in addition to two moku-hanga 5-day workshops that
month, one in Colorado and one in New Jersey, the 50th anniversary of SKA,
my karate organization in California, plus a big family get-together in
Colorado either right before or right after I teach there, I forget)...

I definitely do NOT plan to convert the new press to any kind of mobile
printing unit, though, so it'll be just li'l ol' me (sans press). :-D

BTW, the press frame is all assembled now, bed in place, the bottom roller
aligned in bearings and end-plates, a deep slice on the back of my hand
where the sheet-metal bed slipped as I engaged it into its slots in the
frame and the (sharp!) corner of the bed made a very precise 2" long
V-gouge in me, so the thing has been prematurely Baptized-in-Blood (Happy
belated Halloween -- don't worry, no photos of this part are going to be
posted -- YUCK)! Few minor adjustments, including leveling everything
await me now, so... Back to work!

Message posted from: Google News Update

The Provincetown Art Association and Museum is re-opening next week, with an exhibition of woodcut prints ...

***

... It’s a warm late October afternoon. Workers are abuzz — banging nails, painting over the spackled walls, taking measurements — as McCarthy, wearing a PAAM hard hat (one of many that will probably be given away to donors), surveys the work that’s left to be done. (The grand opening has twice been postponed. PAAM was scheduled to open in the spring, and was rescheduled to open Labor Day weekend with several shows, including a Wolf Kahn exhibition, which has been rescheduled to open on Memorial Day weekend 2006.) There’s still a lot of work to do but McCarthy says that even if the building isn’t entirely finished, the gallery space will be. Six shows are set to open in the museum next Friday, including “Ten Provincetown Masters,” “Essential Beauty: The Paintings of Oliver Newberry Chaffee,” “A Community of Artists: The Collection of the Provincetown Art Association and Museum,” “The Provincetown Print: A Selection of White-Line Color Woodblock Prints,” “The New PAAM: Organiz
ed by Machado and Silvetti Associates,” and a “Members’ Juried” show.

“Forty percent of the art we’re showing has been made here but was never shown before,” McCarthy says of the upcoming exhibitions, adding that the works haven’t been exhibited because of lack of space.

The second-floor studio-school space may be the best part of the new museum. It includes a painting and print-making studio, print-making presses, two drawing studios and a painting studio. McCarthy is convinced it will bring some great artist-teachers to the museum.

“Each one has the northern light and each one gets the side light, too,” she says. “That’s why people come to take classes [in Provincetown]. They want the light.” ...

Hey, Mike !!! Why not just mount an old truck engine underneath the bed of
that thing, slap on some headlights and tail lights, and just drive that
rascal out to Oregon???

Cheers ...... Charles
