Greetings printmakers! Last night I got a call from Alex Prentiss from
McClains. She asked for my permission to place one of my images in
their up coming catalog. What fun.

My dad is my biggest fan, and spoke with Alex about the idea. I am so
sure that she didn't bring it up to him. Anyhow it is an honor to be
asked.. My first viewing of the catalog was probably a month ago when
I'd just joined this group. I was thrilled to see names of group members
along side such beautiful artwork in the catalog.

This is the link, I've shared it before, of the print project I
participated in.

Remember I am a beginner and this is a lino cut with water based ink.

hello everyone!
I have a quastion about printing the hanga style. I checked out John Amos's write up and it is really great. But what I am confused about is re-moistening the paper. when I print the color blocks and the paper begins to dry around the edges or more specifically in the inked area, will the colors bleed when wetting?
I will be using pure high quality ground pigments with rice starch method (learned from barens site). I have access to the best materials, (due to the fact that I run an Art supply store) so the materials will be top notch. Using Cherry wood planks with nice even grain. I am striving to get a great first run. I am already in love with this technique because of all the theory I have in my head!
Last- when the exhibition says 8"x9" - am I correct in assuming this is the image size? Thanks and Cheers!

Hello everyone.
lurking less!
I have a blog since my website is in repair.

http://360.yahoo.com/virtu_studio

I'd rather the term blog was:

"I once made a blog,
More a prologue,
than a catalog.
Maybe a dialogue
rather than monologue".

So, less a blog than a logue!

Mindy,

Congratulations on your image selection to the McClains catalog, it is a
great image and the 'Found in Japan' book and prints are wonderful to look
at. McClains does a wonderful job showcasing printmakers this way.

I also enjoyed your link to Sheila Hudson's process & photos on how she
did her 'White Eye' bird print. Sheila's linocut uses the reduction
process, a spoon to print and a pin registration system instead of the
japanese kento. Very simple and very straightforward approach for
beginners interested in multi-color printmaking and with wonderful & fresh
results. Key to the whole process is her value study to breakdown the
steps in printing the different colors.

Hi Rob, You've chosen a good person to emulate! John Amos' write-up
(and print) is excellent.

Nope, the colors won't bleed. They sort of absorb into the fibers of
the paper. That is if you are not using too much color/paste/water on
your block. You will arrive at the proper amount as you go. Just pay
attention to how the impression is coming along. You don't want little
globs or lines of wet gooey pigment to appear around the edges of your
imprint on the paper. That tells you there's too much water or pigment
or paste (or all 3). It is better to err on the side of less (you can
always make another pass to make it darker or denser).

It is a wonderful technique and very portable!

Nope, 8x9 is paper size - not image size. The image size can be
anything within that 8x9 size.

Can't wait to see your prints!

Dear Carol,

As a lurker so far I want to say thank you for your reference to John Amoss acount of his print making process...very helpful to see how he works...

I was exposed to Moku Hanga by taking April Vollmers's class in June of 2005. I enjoy the process. I also value this web site and will at some time share my prints!!

At this time I am also taking a print making class from Robyn Smith... so I am being exposed to other methods besides Moku Hanga. We recently went as a class to San Francisco Center for the Book and Trillium Press which are worth a visit.

Printers thank you for being here!!
