Hi all,

I've been a (very) occasional forum participant and semi-regular lurker for some years. The all-hanga exchange has drawn me out of hiding. I've signed up and, in deference to the guidelines, am actually submitting a message to the forum so that I can begin to relinquish my 'mystery name' status.

I'm thrilled to have the exchange as motivation, both in terms of the deadline and the amazing prints that always come out of them. I feel absolutely humble when I see the quality of work that has sprung from this group. Since I finished my MFA I've been scrambling to just get caught back up with life which has meant focusing mostly on my new job as a wood shop teacher in a big public high school in Delaware. The down side is that teaching, it turns out, is a really hard and time-consuming job. The up side is that I throw away enough cherry cut-offs to draw curses from most of the forum members. I have more lumber than I know what to do with!

I have cut a few blocks recently. I got a set of the powergrip knives and find them to be 100% more useful than my previous flexcut set. The laminated steel powergrip seem to get a finer edge and hold it longer. As for printing, I'm eager to try hanga for the first time having been an oily guy thus far.

Love and peace,
Erin

Erin,
When you start to scream and pound the table with your fist, write to us for support!
Use less paste and less water than you possibly think you will need...just enough to make the block look satin when you look across it. This is the single most common problem with the first hanga prints...too much pigment, paste and water. But you can do this....and once you get hooked you will want to give up oil (well, maybe not altogether, it is hard to replace those blended rolls, one roll with a roller and 10 separate impressions with a baren...sort of a hard choice) the non-toxicity of water based printing is good.
Best to you,
Barbara

Deadlines are no fun. Especially when they change! For me, the Nov. 1st
deadline for exchange 26 turned into Oct 1st- Because I took a new job and will
be on my ship for the entire month of October... But, the prints are in the
mail!

I am looking forward to seeing all the other work in this exchange...
December seems so far off, but then again, that first deadline seemed WAY off when
I signed up for the exchange!!

Also, Thank for all those who provided input on the Ball bearing barens vs.
rolling pins/pin presses... I still haven't made my decision, but I am
starting to lean towards just buying a new etching press with a 24" bed... The 12"
just isn't cutting it any more. I can't imagine ever needing a larger bed than
that, though I said that when I bought the 12" bed, too... Oh well, What's
another couple grand??

I have a question on the use of Gampi paper. I purchased it from Mc Claims.
It is beautiful paper but definitely has two different sides. Which is the
proper side to print on? I am doing western style prints with water soluble ink
and a press. Thanks for your input.

Dear Dale,

You can print on either side, of course, but the effect is a little
different depending on the paper... Handmade Japanese paper like your
gampi has one side which is supposed to be printed -- dry Japanese paper
usually has a 'smoother' side and a 'rougher' side which you can determine
by feeling it gently between your thumb and index or middle finger -- the
'smooth' side is intended to receive the color... If you can't tell by
feeling, sometimes if you slightly dampen your finger and thumb the
print-side is 'stickier' than the back-side -- also, shippers generally
roll the smooth side "IN", so (not completely dependable, of course), if
you can't tell by feeling, then if you print on the concave side you're
likely printing on the side intended -- but I HAVE received papers from
McClains with a few sheets reversed in the roll, so it's best to check each
sheet carefully.

Hello everyone!
My name is Robert Viana. I am brand spanking new to Barens! I am a printmaker from New Hampshire now living in Florida. I am a very active artist. I make various forms of prints throughout the week. Some days I make etchings, other's woodcuts, and Lino cuts. I have a tremendous love for art in itself and I am drawn to printing. I love the technical end of the craft and the vision I hold in my head to be realized only at the end of each piece.

I signed up for the exhibition #27 and I am very excited to begin. I have not done the all hanga before. I am beginning my research presently and was wondering if any of you out there can point me in the right direction for reference materials? Hard copy or internet, does not matter. I am always looking to do new things in printing so this is going to be great! Please send me some leads, and I look forward to the exchanges! I hope to become a very active member.
Cheers, Rob

Hi Robert. Where in Florida are you? I'm in Jacksonville, FL. Welcome to
Baren! Look forward to seeing your work.

I haven't done any hanga yet myself ...presently I'm just an oily person but
you're definitely in the right place for direction in that area.
