The "Pets, Real or Fantastical" Exhibit has been on display for
the past two weeks in the Art Corridor Exhibit Area, and will
continue through the next week at William Rainey Harper College,
Palatine, IL, USA. It has been well received!

Oh my goodness! My sister went to Harper! Back when it was a junior
college some 30 years ago. I had heard it grew up. Shiny.

I grew up in Arlington Heights, just next door. Small world.

Any chance of the exhibit getting online?!

Anyone in the vicinity of Victoria, B.C. between now and October 10 might
like to check out a local exhibit. I did a nature printing demonstration at
Goldstream Nature House last Monday. There is an art show there titled "The
Nature of Island Artists". Have a look at:

http://www.goldstreamnaturehouse.com

Yep, I do have a print in the show, one of my newer pieces ... Japanese red
maple:

Subject: [Baren 28876] ALL-HANGA exchange #27 sign-up begins Oct 1
Send Message: To this poster

October 1st is day after tomorrow (here in Kansas City) and it's almost
time to sign-up for exchange #27 which is to be a themed exchange in a size
"other" than chuban or oban...

I counted quite a number of interesting posts suggesting themes for this
exchange, beginning with a popular suggestion for a 'tengu' theme, then
requests for a second all-hanga 'theme', then 'mythical beasts, 'monsters',
a reduction print 'theme', and a request to delay any all-hanga exchange
until #28 or later... Here's how I counted your "votes" (and I tried hard
to accurately count all your comments):

2 votes: wait until #28 for all-hanga 'theme'
2 votes: mythical beasts
3 votes: monsters
4 votes: reduction 'theme'
5 votes: tengu
9 votes: all-hanga 'theme'

There were several who suggested hanga and/or tengu, tengu and/or monsters,
etc and I've split these into votes for each category. Some people
repeated their suggestion in several postings -- I counted those as a
single 'vote'.

Theme... In order to obtain a 'best fit' it seems appropriate that
exchange #27 be all-hanga (aqueous pigments hand-printed using baren) with
a "mythical beast" theme. This theme ought to cover tengu, monsters, and
other mythical beasties and ought to produce a very exciting suite of prints!

Size... I had no guidance from the group, but in keeping with the theme
and respecting the limitations of our portfolio cases I am going to make
this exchange "shikishiban" 8x9 inches (20 x 23cm). Papers larger than 8
inches in the smaller dimension will not fit into a case, so please do not
mis-measure! Shikishiban is a "poem card format" typically used for
privately sponsored surimono -- normally the most deluxe and subtle
printings which might include metallic pigments, text, and/or blind
embossing in addition to color.

Exchange #27 Sign-up page is at
http://barenforum.org/exchange/exchange_sign-up.html Sign-up begins October
1, 2005, work period begins November 1, 2005

Medium: moku-hanga (traditional Japanese woodblock print, hand rubbed with
baren, aqueous pigments, paper)
Theme: all-hanga "mythical beasts"
Paper: Shikishiban, 8x9 inches (20 x 23cm)
Registration period: One month starting October 1 , 2005 (or until 30
participants are enrolled)
Work period: Three months starting November 1
Deadline for finished prints: February 1st, 2006

Please read and understand the exchange requirements, rules, and deadlines
at http://barenforum.org/exchange/exchange_sign-up.html before you sign up!

Good luck!

Subject: [Baren 28879] Royal Show Prize
Send Message: To this poster

Hi everyone,

I am now back from 10 days painting and drawing (more of the latter) in
Tuscany, Italy, a couple of nights in Rome and a day in Dubai. The
Tuscany countryside was so inviting for painting and the Villages for
drawing. I took 8 rolls of film so have plenty to work on in the
future. I did take my digital too, but double images made stopping and
checking to see if I had captured each image was frustrating and time
consuming...... now have to get the chip reformatted I think.

But I came back to find I had won the Perth Royal Show Wood Carving
Prize ( for any article without a specific catagory). I put in my
Lighthouse print and seven blocks. I am now $10Aust richer!!!! last
year I was beaten by a beautifully crafted rocking horse and an inlaid
jigsaw puzzle, well this year there was a rocking horse in a
different catagory and I beat the inlaid jigsaw puzzle!

That has put me in fine spirits for the Opening of my exhibition on
Tuesday night.... all my 40 prints are at the gallery and I have my
carving and printing tools and a couple of woodblock sets to display on
Monday.

Will keep you posted. Have to get someone to take some photos.

Anna found someone else to exhibit with me..... an Italian who paints
and prints (looks like screen prints at a glance) on canvas.

Cheers,

Jan
