A couple of weeks back, we posted a newspaper story (Baren message #28707) about the printmaking exhibition currently up at the National Gallery in Washington DC. The story didn't make the exhibition sound particularly exciting ... here's a different viewpoint:
http://washingtontimes.com/entertainment/20050916-091420-5093r.htm

"Prints and papermaking -- principally used for producing multiple religious images -- arrived in Europe in the early 15th century and set off one of the great information explosions of all time -- an explosion that preceded Johann Gutenberg's invention of movable type by 30 years. Until recently, scholars had neglected the phenomenon, but renewed interest has prompted the National Gallery of Art's exquisite and informative 'Origins of European Printmaking: Fifteenth-Century Woodcuts and Their Public.'

"The long-overdue exhibit, the first major international show focusing on these earliest prints on paper in the West, was co-organized by the gallery with the Germanisches Nationalmuseum, Nuremberg. In choosing 146 of the best examples from their collections, museum curators Peter Parshall and Rainer Schoch have emphasized the linear, singing quality of the prints. " ... (more) ...

Also coming up soon, at the Toledo Museum of Art (Ohio):
Opening Oct. 15, "Strong Women, Beautiful Men: Japanese Portrait Prints" features 75 Japanese woodblock prints from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries.

I am doing a presentation on women printmakers and short demo for a ladies group I belong to on Wednesday. I have prints from many of you and the list of websites that needed updating I could not access. I would have loved a tad bit more info about some of you ladies. But I do have your work from exchanges to show and that speaks for itself. It would help if you kept your web sites current for just this type of thing tho. This is an opportunity to teach non artists about what a print is????

I can't keep track of all the woodblock beauties I am now viewing on Baren
and I can't respond to everyone of you. There is no excuse for the
appreciation of
what I see. I think they are witty, have a wonderful balance of techniques,
especially use of the marks I love. and just get to me.

You people are showing really special works and if seem indiscriminate
in my taste, you can't take away from my wow enjoyment.

Thank you all for sharing your woodblock prints
