The Chapel Hill article mentioned Erich Heckel, which got me thinking about the 'Brucke' movement
in Germany. If anyone's interested, MOMA had a great exhibit of their prints back in 2002. They
created a beautiful interactive site with music, flash, and lots of prints. Heckel, Kirchner, Schmidt-
Rottluff, Nolde... all of them are represented. The site is still up, find it here:
http://www.moma.org/exhibitions/2002/brucke/
The prints are very energetic, exciting, full of risk, and very inspiring.
Dan, glad to hear that you're ok!
Peace.
Joshua

Unlike in the west where it was always a no-no to make reproductions of
original prints, in Japan it was (is) a common an accepted practice. Even
hundreds of years ago a publisher would buy off the blocks or the rights
to an image and make his own run of new prints....probably changing the
cartouche or publishing seals but leaving the rest of the image intact. A
lot had to do with the popularity of the prints or series. Hiroshige's
Tokaido has probably seen hundreds of runs and a number of blocks recut
thru the years ....like MIke mentioned original first-run prints would be
very expensive.

If you look at any printmaking technique, it obviously develops & grows
with time and each passing generation adds on it's things. For Japanese
printmaking the summit in carving & printing skills may have been the
period between Hokusai/Hiroshige (1850's) and the turn of the century
just before the commercialization of printing. IMO reprints done by
skilled craftsman of this period are every bit as "good" as earlier
prints. You have to know your publishers and your printmaking houses to
know who put out quality work and who did not.....certainly after WWII the
tourist and american occupation brought out new demands for more
reproductions...perhaps not all of best quality ?

It depends on if you have your mind set on a first edition print for the
historical and collector value or if you are after a particular print for
the beauty and
skilled used to make it.

After the 1923 Tokyo earthquake that destroyed most of Watanabe's
inventory the publisher had many popular blocks recut so that new prints
could be made. Today the Yoshida family continues to make reprints from
the original blocks (not all woodblocks by the way, many were metal !) by
founder Hiroshi and son Toshi. And so it goes......

Dan, glad all is well..............

thanks....Julio Rodriguez
