There seemed to be some mysterious kind of osmosis involved, too. He did some printing while the workshop was in session, just quietly on the side, and somehow I picked up a visceralfeeling for how the baren sounds when it's held properly and what the rightamount of pigment looks like as the maru bake passes over the block and howthe knife is held - stuff I didn't know I was learning until I tried it athome. Matt is still teaching me long after the workshop ended!
At the summit in Kansas City David Bull printed for us all day long. We all learned something special from him. Hope we can have something similiar at the next summit.

Subject: [Baren 28258] John Center to coordinate Exchange #26
Send Message: To this poster

Per our exchange 'rules', those who are participating in exchange #25 and
signed up for #26 have now been officially added into the queue. There are
39 signed up for Exchange #26 as of this morning, so we're almost certain
to have a 'full' suite of prints. The first two or three on the waiting
list are very likely to be bumped into the exchange as we frequently have
some drop-outs, so those near the top of the waiting list must be prepared
to submit prints!

John Center has graciously volunteered to coordinate this exchange. John
recently coordinated exchange #19 and I prefer to select the coordinator
from among those who have completed one or more exchanges but never
coordinated one... But this time John was the ONLY one to select the
"Choose me, choose me!" button, so he's "it" again and I'm very grateful
for his generous spirit. You may contact John at his official coordinator
email address:
coordinator26@barenforum.org
-- If you find you must drop out of the exchange for any reason, please do
so as early as possible (before October 1st in order to avoid 'penalty') by
emailing John.

The sign-up for Exchange #26 will remain open at
http://www.barenforum.org/exchange/exchange_sign-up.html through the end of
July, but it is doubtful whether those who sign up now will make it into
the exchange... #26 is an Oban size exchange (about 15 x 10 inches or 38 x
25.5 cm) and there is no theme. Complete 'rules' can be found here:
http://www.barenforum.org/exchange/exchange_26/exchange_26.html

==========

Sign-up for Exchange #27 will begin October 1, 2005 (due Feb 1 2006) and
will be a "themed" exchange on paper some other size than oban or
chuban... If you have suggestions for a theme or paper size for #27,
please post them here on the Baren Forum! I'll save your suggestions, then
recap them for further discussion as October draws nearer!

Thanks so much,

Mike

Hello,

I am happy and amazed to find such a lively group of printmakers. I do woodcuts and etchings, but woodcut is my favorite.
I have been taking a class at my local community college for a little over a year and I'm hopelessly hooked. I am a 53 year old
mother of a college student and when he went off to school so did I. I am also a weaver but my weaving is on hiatus while I
concentrate on printmaking.

I learned on a press and have not tried the baren method yet, but I would like to give it a try. I find all these Japanese terms
and sizes fascinating tho' incomprehensible. Is there a place I can go to for definitions of these terms or a short tutorial?

I don't have a website yet, but you can see some of my work at the link below. Go to the Etchings, Etc. folder.

I look forward to talking shop.

Hi Ellen, welcome to Baren and the discussion group....I enjoyed looking
at your prints and monotypes, wow...you have quite a background of work.
Other than the word 'baren' and a few other loose terms we throw around
once in a while there is no need to learn all the Japanese words to follow
the forum...but if you are interested here is a link to common
printmaking related terms in Japanese that David put together a while
back. There is also an audio link to hear the actual sounds.

Hi Georga,

I'm just north of L.A. in the Santa Clarita valley. Near Magic Mountain. I take classes at College of the Canyons with Jim Lorigan, a master printer. I've learned a lot from him, and other students. I soak it up like a sponge.

Were in L. A. are you?

Thanx for the welcome, Julio. I'll check out the audio file. I'm relieved I won't have to learn a whole new vocabulary. I 'spect I'll pick it up along the way. Thanx for checking out my stuff.
