I'm not sure to whom I need to give notice re dropping out of exchange #24
- I've taken on more than I can manage and realize (sadly) it would be a
problem to meet the deadline.
with apologies

I've always hardened the wood with 50% white shellac in alcohol -brushed on
- 2 or three coats-
just a light sanding between coats with 3M Fine (General purpose sandpaper
-150 aluminum oxide)
I've used spar varnish but the shellac/alcohol seems less toxic and
achieves about the same end
Has anyone else tried it??

"SHAME" seems to me a terrific theme, Robin and Amanda! Sign-up for the
next themed exchange (#27) will open for sign-up on October 1. Seems like
a long way away, I know, but I will (hopefully) "wake up" again in early
September and ask everyone for theme suggestions (remind me if I forget,
OK?) so please mention "shame" again then... In the meantime, I've saved
both your emails in my "Baren Ideas for themes" folder so I will see them
again in September!

Tomorrow (April 1) the sign-up will open for Exchange #25, "Dreams and
Visions", chuban (10 x 7.5 inches) here:

I attended a workshop by Endi Paskovic at the MAPC meeting in Lincoln last
fall. He recomended using Bulls Eye Shellac. It is available in a spray can at
Home Depot etc. and is very convenient to use. He used it before and after
carving. I think it may help protect the wood from water when cleaning the blocks.

Dreams & visions sounds good to me! I imagine a lot of great prints
will result - as if any of the themes wouldn't bring out the greatness
in Baren-ers!

Dan, if the Hosho you are talking about is from an art store - then NO
it is not a good paper for a beginner to use. You have to be really
good at judging the moisture content with art store Hosho (and that
includes the so-called Professional Hosho) - I don't think it has
enough sizing in it. However, if you want to use paper from the art
store - just do a search in the baren archives on western paper & you
will get several discussions of easy to find paper. There are several
really good (and pretty inexpensive) papers in the baren mall. Mall
paper is almost the only paper I use now. I like Matsamura-san's #8,
#10, & #12. Plus, I ordered a few more sheets of different ones to try
out this last time.

Also, I have some paper in a plastic bag in my freezer - that really
keeps it damp & usable without mold.

Hanga pigments actually go *into* the fibers of the paper. So colors
shouldn't offset - unless your paper is too damp or your colors are too
gooey or you haven't pressed down your baren hard enough to embed the
pigments. You can actually hold a hanga under running water & the
colors won't run! I've seen it done & I have done it myself. Kinda
scary, though!

Wanda

Hanga in there, Dan!

I have several fun art (mostly woodcut) projects going... First, I am
working on a commissioned book with ten 8" x 10" wood engravings. It is
a family Christmas book with the story of the nativity. (here is a link-
input is welcome: http://laughingcrowstudio.com/Christmas_book.html )
The challenge is how to take such a cliche theme and do something new with
it. (I have two other book projects featuring my woodcuts on the burner,
too - as soon as I am done with this in a few weeks.) Then, I am working
with the New Mexico Wilderness Alliance on a series of woodcuts of
endangered wilderness areas. Funny how everything happens at once,
because yesterday, I got a call from Columbia Pictures and they are going
to be using at least two, but maybe more of my works (one painting, one
engraving)in an upcoming film starring Jennifer Garner. (It is some of my
wildlife artwork - for her character plays an activist for the Green
Party).

So, I am a bit crazed, but very happy!

My rooster just died. Poor soul was sooo sad he departed this earth and needs a replacement. Waking with rooster thoughts on how to give birth to another crowing soul I had a flash of an idea, born while half awake. It does say that the exchange is open to print media other than woodblock. I take it that means i can concoct any type of print I desire. But can I stretch this to something that is consistently inconsistent? My mind wandered to a collagraph that would include color that would be applied to the plate using more than one color pigment at a time. Something like a monotype, but the image would be the same shape, size and colors, just inconsistent. Can I do this? Of course it might not work, but before I make the poor devil and than get told i screwed up, I want to know.
Oh and can I add rice paste to these powdered pigments and apply them to a surface and make it work, it would not be wood??? Has anyone tried this before? Or should I try putting another additive? I can not get gum arabic here, so maybe I could use honey???
Gads my brain is bursting.
