Anyone in the Cleveland, Ohio area might want to see the Cleveland
Museum of Art's exhibition -- "Visions of Japan: Prints and Paintings
from Cleveland Collections" which will be on exhibit until April 10.

James Mundie, you would like the richly dark and colorful mezzotints
of Yozo Hamaguchi (I hope I have that spelled right -- I made notes but
can't read my fast scribbling). One of my favorite mezzotints, though,
was by Kozuhisa Honda -- striated clean green moving into rows of
black with an emerging young sun of vermillion, titled "Awakening
Horizon" -- (1981).

I put a star by Kanae Amamoto's "Fisherman" (1906, but printed in 1960)
which I fell in love with and wrote next to it "I want to do this!"
Beside my notes I have written "this marks the beginning of
Sosaku-Hanga movement in which artists design, carve and print their
own work."

I lingered long and found myself butting in to people's conversations
where they were explaining to others the printing method. One woman,
for instance, was telling her children that the prints were made by
watercolor with each color applied to the same board (kind of like the
Provincetown white line style) and then printed on a press. Maybe some
of the large modern ones were made that way, but I did share what I
know of the way Dave does it and the way we are doing it. I explained
the difference between eastern and western styles of printing and
carving. Later, another woman telling her friends about how these all
were printed on a press (they were looking at Hiroshige's work at that
moment). I couldn't help myself, folks. I jumped in again and briefly
explained about the use of a baren in printing Hiroshige's designs.
The mother loved the information, the other lady looked annoyed.
Ooops, maybe I had too much fervor in wanting to share the knowledge
where it wasn't asked. But, I couldn't just stand there and let them
all think that one was printed on a press, could I?

It was and still is a show worth seeing. And by the way, Daniel
Kelly's wonderful large piece "Koi" was showing. All I can say about
that one is , "Wow!" I can't even imagine the energy and determination
and vision it would take to make a piece like that.

Hello Ehud,
I saw your website and want to encourage you in
multi-media. I am a printer as well as photographer
and glasswork with an acquired disability. I love your
sensibility with composition and light. I can imagine
that your subject matter lends itself perfectly to
printing especially by hand. I suggest you not worry
about a press, mine is dismantled for the last 5 years
and I think handwork, like in the darkroom is a good
place to start.
my best,

There is a show of Junichiro Sekino's work at White Lotus Gallery here in Eugene. If any of you are in the area this month, it IS worth seeing.
Here is a link to the gallery

Hi all you baren folks,
I wanted to thank everyone that took the time to share their ideas about printing with 5 year olds with me . This is for my daughters class. I have purchased the Styrofoam plates and will probably use speedball water base ink. I tried tempera but it seems to be a little runny. I do have a digital camera and I will post photo's later so that I can share the experience with all of you.
Thanks Again Gilda

i went to the white lotus gallery to look at the work there and i noticed
several artists doing "stencil prints" anyone have any idea how this is done?
i came up with my own ideas
(ink the stencil itself black and use stencil brushes to add the other colors
and then run it through a press?????) but i was wondering what everyone
else thought
thanks

Welcome Ehud!
You're photography is terrific - you have such a wonderful sense of
composition and feeling for the abstract. I've photographed my share
of wrought iron, always thinking it would make a great woodcut, so I
can really appreciate the several you have with fences, railings, etc.
in them. Love the juxtaposition of the car and parking sign with the
mural - what a hoot! It will be fun to watch your woodblocks grow -

Cheers (from the other Vancouver in WA),

I have done many of them. Warrington Colescott http://littletoncollection.com/warrington_colescott.htm did a workshop in '89 that showed how he does his etchings using card stock as a stencil. I showed him Kimdura which is much more durable, hence the name. The class did a series of prints using this technique for both etching and woodcut.
An easy way to set up for editions: Put your block down and surround it on all sides with wood the same height, then tape your stencil to it, hinged with the tape. This way you can overlap colors from one stencil to the next. You could even do two sets of four if you wants ed to be completely nuts:)
Great fun!

PS All of Warrington's colors are on the plate when he prints it.

Gayle,
I think you did the right thing....when Lee and I traveled to Europe I was dragging him along from museum to museum and giving him the 2 cent art tour wherever we went. I found we picked up quite a few people, sort of listening sureptitiously. It was funny, but nice. I was an unpaid tour guide, but only about art, belive me. There were sure places I wished we had a knowledgeable guide. Everyone wants information and it might as well be correct!
Best to all,
Barbara

I just wanted to thank everyone for the welcome I have received.

People have been generous with their praise of my photos (which of course
feels wonderful :).)

Also, people have been very generous with offers of encouragement and help
(thanks Barbara.)

As soon as I get my carving tools back from a friend who borrowed them, I
will go and buy a block just to make some marks. I think watching the kind
of marks I can make is a good place to start. I will then ink them and see
what they look like printed.

And Dan, please contact me off list using the mailto link on the main page
of my web site. I have not worked with persons with Autism in a while (3
years) and each person is different but maybe I can offer some assistance.

Well, thanks again. I can tell that this is a generous community. I am
going to go out for a drive and take a sketchbook with me. Fear of drawing
will not prevent me from learning.

Ehud

Georga,
We have an artist at PAN who uses stencils, she actually uses typing paper to cut and print from. She is teaching a class one day soon and I sure want to take it so I can see how she does it...here are some samples of her work..she says she cuts piles of images and then has ink out all over the the place....she prints on a press.
