We need a theme for # 25, so says Mike.

In a private discussion with another Baren member we talked about
dreams and visions and the specific meanings they have for each of us.
So, along that vein I suggest Dreams and Visions as a theme for #25.
That looks pretty wide open to me, but then I used to suffer from
astigmatism and everything looks pretty wide open to me -

Sigh,

Maria, what tools did you use to carve those hard woods -- power?

O.k., NO ARGUMENTS, JUST IDEA REQUEST:

What do you all use to paste down the color sheets to the blocks after the
black line has been printed?

Hope that makes sense?

PS Thanks for all the great tips and ideas, I've used most of them.

I have an idiotic collection of chisels, mostly Japanese (Baren Mall) or
Flexcut. I carve with u's and v's, seldom use the toh, although I use my toe
to power my Foredom power tool.
Seriously, I use anything from 1mm v or u to a 1" clearing chisel. Most of
my work seems to be done by the 2mm to 3mm tools with 1mm used for the
smallest details.

I use power tools (from my idiotic collection of power tools) only to get
"random" marks sometimes. I have a Dremmel and a Foredom but found they make
too much noise and, more annoying, too much dust. I got a dust control
system and a respirator and that seems to work okay, although usually I just
step outside when I use them so I don't have to sweep. I sometimes use
reciprocating attachments for my rotary tools to clear large portions of
wood but the noise scares the cats.

No power tools on those two prints.

gilda, I have never done printmaking w/five year olds but I have done papermaking with five year olds, which was a total blast. You did have to watch them to make sure they weren't putting any pulp into their mouth etc though.

I would not use any sharp tools like knives with them, I recommend getting the foamlike materials people have mentioned and then just using pens, sticks etc to make impressions. Another concept would be to have them glue cut-out cardboard shapes onto cardboard for relief images which you could ink up.

best wishes
