Art Teachers' Conference, Horncastle College, Lincolnshire, UK
Just checked the Forum today and my report to you on the Surimono and Lefties Exchange exhibitions seems to have been scrambled. There may have been too many words, so to cut a long report short check http://homepage.ntlworld.com/h.french1/HORNCASTLEBACK.htm

Harry ,thank you for bringing the presence of Baren also the Lefties Can
Carve special exchange to England.

Good job. The display looks excellent. The velcro idea worked really well.
The report you sent came out clear as can be to me , also the photos and
comments. I'm glad there was such appreciation at Horncastle.

Still have not gotten anything from Yahoo about organizing the summit. I
will be available to help. I can help find camp spots for anyone who wants
to camp on the coast. Also in my area there are many bed and breakfast
places that are lovely. Also both the Oregon and Washington coasts have many
many motels and hotels. Oregon coast on the pacific ocean is much more
scenic. In my area the bay is very pretty. So for those who want to extend
their time and stay on the coast i can help. Also I can come to Portland to
help with things there.

Harry, your first message to Baren (which reported on the Surimono
Exhibition) is in the archives even if it didn't appear in the HTML
version of the digest.

Charles and all,
Most laser copies can be transferred well enough with heat - laser uses
heat to fuse the ink to the paper and you can use heat to release it.
For some reason some copies release easier than others, and I've found
that it must be a "fresh" copy, not one that has been in the files for
years. I use an old iron and turn it up on high, but when we tried
this at Mike's he had one of those fancy new irons and it didn't get
hot enough. So, I guess the secret is, go get an old iron at the local
thrift shop, and iron paper. It is much less toxic than using acetone
or spirits. I've also used xylene, and put it in a felt tip pen. I
used to keep several pens in a closed jar with a little xylene in the
bottom so that I could always have a fresh pen if the first one dried
out too fast. Of course, you should use that outdoors, too. I like
the iron better, though I confess that it doesn't always transfer the
detail I need. If that happens I place a piece of carbon paper (from
the dark ages) and go over the details with that. So, the lesson is,
tape your paper down securely to enable going back in with carbon if
necessary. Try it - you'll live longer and, as added incentive, you
will have less brain damage. Though I'm not sure I'm a real good
example of that :-)

Cheers!

Harry,
The baren has a beautiful 4 color brochure designed by our professional designer John Amoss who lives in Atlanta. We hear from him seldom as he is teaching as well as his design business and has a young family so is pretty busy wearing all those hats. We printed it here in Oregon, money for printing donated by me. There are still about 1500 of them so if anyone wants some to promote the baren, just send me your snail mail address and I will send a few to you. Harry, you are really out there promoting us so send your address to me off line and I will send you a box of brochures! The kids will love seeing them, they are very professional.
Best to all,
Barbara

Hello everyone!

Thanks for the nice comments Mike, Charles, Louise, Sharri, Barbara, Gayle
and Georga!

Charles is right, I haven't sent any posts in the past few months as I was
really too busy with too many things to think about... and unfortunately
I even had to cancel a couple of exchanges due to inaccessibility to my
printing studio in the country.
Don't worry - I will catch up!

THIS IS A MESSAGE for those in the deck of cards exchange. Remember that
one that took one and a half years to complete?
Well... right now I am into another project: I was thinking of having the
complete deck published by a typographer - i.e. having a regular set of
cards printed, laminated and boxed. This would cost around 3 euros per set
of cards if 1000 copies were printed.
I think it would be a gret idea to make provided that I first receive a
written letter by eafch artist stating that I incur in no copyright issues
if I get that artist's card printed.
So, first of all, all those who took part in this exchange should think
about this opportunity and decide if they want their cards printed or not

Count me in on this one. You have my permission to reprint my card. I will
pop for 10 decks myself.

I have been corresponding with Tom in Aussie land about paper from the mall, and he sent me to his site to see his work....he is sort of humble about sharing it with all so I am doing it for him. I think you will all be pleased to see his growth and excited to see his work. I encouraged him to post it....but since he did not, here it is,
Best to all,
Barbara
