Hey Mike, thanks muchly! Actually a bit embarrassing ... :-)

The Treasure Chest series is indeed being received very well, and I
think it's off to a good start. I worked hard trying to get a good
design for that box, one that would make people say 'cool!', and maybe
I hit it!

(I also think it would make a _great_ format for a [Baren] exchange
sometime!)

I'm just now coming up for air after the annual exhibition, which has
turned out to be the best one since the spectacular show at the end of
the long poets series around six years ago. Lots of people through, a
good fun gallery talk on the Sunday, and plenty of orders! I haven't
had time to do a web page yet, but will be putting up a video
walk-through hopefully in a couple of days, and will post when it's
ready.

Something else I'll try and get time for soon is to scan and post the
manga story that hit the news-stands yesterday morning. I don't
remember if I mentioned this on [Baren] before, but a couple of months
back I was visited by a manga (Japanese comic book) editor and artist.
We had a good long interview/talk together, they took a boatload of
photos of me/the work/the place, and then wandered off. I didn't really
know what they had in mind, but I found out yesterday ... Woodblock
Man! Baren in hand ... flying through the air ... searching out
evil-doers and bringing them to justice! Well ... no, not exactly like
that, but what a hoot it is anyway ... sandwiched in a 300 page comic
book, a ten-page story about me and my work ...

Only problem is, I don't dare send a copy to my mother ... have you
ever _seen_ one of those Japanese comics? Woh woh woh ... !!!

Dave,I am one who is saying "Cool" and passing on the current words of
highest appreciation "Wicked nice".
My generation's vocabulary of praise stopped at "Terrific" and "Great"
The English say "Brilliant"

I am saying this to include all Bareners who are doing exciting things out
there.

Hey, what a pleasant surprise this morning when I brought in the mail and
Exchange #22 was waiting for me.....thank you so much to all the
participants for the
wonderful prints.....this exchange has a bit of everything...b&w
engraving, multi-color prints, collages, portraits, political statements,
nature, etc, etc......so very nice to see again the work of our friend
Horacio from Brazil and his incredible work. The new cases also look great
and are so much like the old ones I can hardly tell the difference. So
many thanks to Mary Kuster for all the work and the beautiful colophon,
very well done Mary !!!!

Lots of new names on this exchange and some very strong work. I am going
to miss not being in Exchange #24, after participating in all 23 exchanges
so far, it looks like my streak is finally over after seven
years....meaning..... we have many new members wanting to participate
which is a good thing for the group....I think this is the first exchange
were participants from the previous exchange have been shut out due to the
overwhelming interest !!!! Congratulations to all the coordinators and to
Mike Lyon for making the quarterly exchanges such a successful project.

Re David's Hanga Chest, as Mike said, it's a beautiful thing.....not only
the first print is soft and delicate, but the presentation and storage box
is a piece of
art in itself. I have mine sitting on the living room table for everyone
to peek at. I am so looking forward to receiving a new print every two
weeks from Japan.
Do you hear that Dave ? ;-)

thanks again to everyone participating in #22 and Mary for coordinating a
real great group of prints........Julio Rodriguez (Skokie, Illinois)

Dan,
It is still me and I just got word that I am getting a shipment via fed ex in the next few days...wahoo!! If I owe anyone a case, now would be the time to let me know. I have a lot of sorting out to figure out who gets what as some of these orders are 6 months old.....or worse. And who has paid and who has not...I will eventually get it straight.
With luck, we will have some on hand from now on.....
Best to all,
Barbara, mall manager

After a marathon session on Wednesday, I printed all the blocks. Keep in
mind I only had to get one "good" print for the commission, but I did print
about 9 additional proofs of each in order to get that "one" just right.

And to reiterate what I posted on another list about "my" papermaker, it has
truly been a thrill to find a twin soul "out there" in the strange world of
art. I now design my prints with some strange concoction of a paper in mind.
As you will see, the prints were conceived with MJ's paper in mind. The
proofs on reg'lar paper look plainish, but once on the proper BGP paper they
really came to life. I also had in mind that the block/print would be
displayed together, so I played around with symmetry a bit.

I must say that MJ is an absolute delight to work with. But we also have a
bunch of fun making and, especially, naming her papers. The papers seem like
they were "made" to accept my sloppy globs of ink, absorbent and strong. We
have a blast!
As a printmaker I have always had much respect for the beauty and mystery of
hand-made paper, but now I am truly a hopeless addict.

Anyhow, here are the prints alongside the blocks, just as they will be
displayed.

I showed my students your blocks and prints tonight as a lesson in
persistence and accuracy, and they loved the images!
Thanks for sharing.

OK, the story is up there, linked from this page:
http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~xs3d-bull/press/index.html

No time to sit here and translate it all ... but anyway, you can get an
idea of what it is about. The first two pages consist of a sort of
'flashback' of the manga artist at age 20 and his friend discussing his
desire to be famous ... and the 'meaning of life', etc. etc. Bottom of
page 2 we see them approaching my place, and over the next eight pages
it's 'Zen and the Art of Woodblock Printmaking' ... Final few panels on
the last page consist of the artist again, reflecting on how his life
has been changed ... What a hoot! :-)
