Subject: [Baren 26858] western papers for hanga

Hi all, I'm sure some of our experts will have better ideas, but I can tell you that one western paper which I've used for hanga is stonehenge paper. It's archival and it's cheap. It also comes in a number of colors. I have used it quite a bit for LARGE hanga prints as it comes in large sizes and doesn't buckle into the cleared-out areas when you're dealing w/large areas that have been cleared. It's also good for drawing if you decide it's no good for hanga! It's quite thick but if moistened properly it can pick up the color fine, though you may have to press hard and/or do several passes for deep color or large areas, but you sometimes need to do that w/Japanese paper. I have also used arches heavyweight, which works ok also.

happy printing!

Eva,
I know Matt Brown, www.ooloopress.com , does moku hanga exclusively and uses Rives Heavyweight paper. I have used stonehenge with some success. The problem is that most western papers have the sizing in the paper instead of on top the paper. Having the sizing on the surface keeps the pigment from bleeding into the surrounding paper. In western paper the fibers are shorter, making it not as strong for the many many repeated printings needed for moku hanga. I suggest you get some of every paper available in your area and just try it. You might find one that works and if so, let us all know. I keep thinking I will do this...but it is one of those things I mean to do one day soon and have been meaning to do it for about 4 years...
best to all,
Barbara

Robert,
Send me off list your mailing address and you misunderstood, it is a $5 discount if you want to get the Contemporary Impressions magazine the Print Alliance puts out. If you want to subscribe, you will need to do so with them.
See you soon,

I love Rives heavyweight (though the name belies the weight:)
Also, I have been using Zerkal (sic) Book in both 100 and 145 GSM
Loves ink!

WARNING: - NON-PRINTMAKING CONTENT.

Just have to tell you all I have a new baby son!

Funny, I thought once the big bump out front was gone I'd be able to get
straight back to printing. But someone should have reminded me how much time
babies take up!

Will be small projects for the time being, but that's OK!

ps. sorry about the double posting.
