Thanks to all for the encouraging feedback. The number of ways to sharpen an edge is amazing, and I will try out as many as I can. Freehand honing is hard for me , I dont have the touch, but I dont think I want to buy a machine.

Carol asks about the wheelie jig thing I mentioned. It is like bicycle training wheels for tool sharpening, it may not look dignified but it gets you going.

More correctly this thing is called a honing gauge, it is designed for sharpening plane blades and chisels. The one I bought is put out in Australia by Supercraft, made in China to FH Prager specifications. There is one on Amazon, but it is withdrawn from sale

Basically it is a set of jaws mounted on a little wheel. The tool is clamped into place with the edge of the chisel contacting the flat of the stone at just the correct bevel. The fit of the tool in the jaws can be improved with a rubber band around the tool handle. By running the wheel back and forth, either on the stone, or on a flat surface butting up to the stone, the tool is sharpened without any of the rocking motion that dulls the edge. The tool then remains in the gauge as you progress through grades of stone/paper/powder. This device will work best for flat chisels (aisuki) and also u-gouges (komasuki) if you have a stone with shaped channels. I bought a moulded ceramic stone from McClains, which works really well. The honing gauge will not work so well for knives (hangi-to) or chisels where the edge is at an angle to the travel of the wheel.

The honing gauge is mentioned in a book on sharpening, and it is criticised for being a little wobbly, but it works if pressure is put on the edge rather than the wheel . It may not be for supreme craftspeople, but for beginners or those with shaky hands it is fantastic.

Oh April, I'm so sorry to hear about Bill Paden. I met him only one time
but impressed me as being such a nice and talented man and his black
printing was like going into a dark wonderful cave. Bea Gold

Amazing work as usual. I am sorry I missed your class in Santa Fe. Great
place to work. How did the weather effect printing?
