Richard Farrel's post did not come through on the daily digest version
of the Baren forum. Here it is again, with apologies to those who have
already seen it.

re.....
In the carving, I have not yet found jewellers rouge, but I have been
told
that valve-grinding paste on plate glass may be even better than rouge
on
leather. I have bought a honing jig, a little wheelie thing that rolls
along
keeping the grinding angle consistent, this has improved my sharpening
immensely. I also bought a fine grade 6" diamond block for the courser
grinding, which is great cause it stays flat.
My carved lines are now much finer. The birch ply I am using does chip
off
now and then, so I fix little nicks with epoxy.

Tom...
Besides printmaking I work as a jeweler, and can help with names of
suppliers for the product needed to get the ultimate edge. Sorry I
cannot even begin to concentrate putting the info together on this
post.
Just in from a wildland fire and out again tomorrow. 15hrs a day
yep burnt out. But over the next few days I will put out a post on
anther
form to find suppliers in your country and post here the products and
suppliers. Hope this helps. Some amazing products out there to make this
chore easy.

Hi there:

Automotive wet/dry papers and 3M micro abrasive papers
glued to plate glass or wooden hones will bring up an
edge every bit as fine as waterstones or oil stones.

Use each grade in order, from a resonable starting
grit without skipping and take your time.

ALWAYS DRAW THE TOOL TO YOU, never push, as you will
cut into your paper or hone.

Finish up by polishing the edges using chromium oxide
honing compound or artist oil paint (dried) applied to
hones or strips of paper.

Cheers,
Eli

Just a note on the sample books from the Baren Mall. They are beautiful and
filled with a lot of papers, I recommend one for the beginner. Thanks for
the comments on the cheaper good papers, It is helpful to hear how others
are doing with the printing. I am saving my dry pigments to take when i
travel, that should be so much nicer for me than carrying jars that some
times leak. I got my leather strop through woodcrafters, with a honing
compound included and love it. Not sure if it can be found online.

I survived!

A little wet, wind blown, but otherwise OK. I hope Jeanne is OK too,
haven't seen her post since Charley visited.

Need some help.
I am printing a large reduction block using Graphic Chemical water
based inks. I am on my four color, with many more to go.
It seems that every time I add a new color, it takes longer to dry. Is
there any way to speed up the drying process or limit the tackiness?

Paper type: no restriction
e.. Drop-out deadline: October 1st, 2004 If you must drop out of the exchange, please do so as early as possible in order to give people on the waiting list time to complete and submit their prints. If you drop out after this date then a penalty may be imposed.
f.. Delivery deadline for finished prints: November 1st, 2004 -- if you do not deliver acceptable prints by this date then a penalty may be imposed. You must deliver

If you order one of our beautiful storage cases you may package your prints as you prefer. Otherwise please deliver your prints in a package that can easily be reused for shipping the collated suite back to you.
Collated exchange mailing deadline: December 1st, 2004. The coordinator is required to complete mailing the collated prints on or before this date.

You may repair and/or replace the prints prior to the delivery deadline or drop out of the exchange prior to the drop-out deadline without penalty, otherwise a penalty may be imposed.
l.. Communications: It is essential that the coordinator be in close and timely communication with you. You must respond promptly to e-mails sent from the coordinator and must notify the coordinator of any change in e-mail address. If you become 'lost' and do not respond to communications from the coordinator, you may be dropped from the exchange without further notice. If this occurs after the Drop-out deadline, a penalty may imposed.
m.. Penalty: The [Baren] Exchange Manager will promptly notify you by email if it is determined that you may be subject to penalty. After serious deliberation while keeping in mind these specifications, the mission of [Baren], the circumstances, and any explanation you provide, the [Baren] Exchange Manager will decide whether to impose any penalty and will promptly notify you of that decision. Any such penalty will be limited to removing your name from any active exchange sign-up and exchange participants lists for a period not to exceed one year.
n.. Delivery information: You must enclose 31 prints, a self-addressed mailing label, and sufficient return postage (in the coordinator's native currency or postage). If you do not know the exact amount of return postage, please send more than you think will be required, for example $10 for USA to USA delivery, $20 for international delivery. The coordinator is a volunteer and is not obligated to return your prints unless you enclose enough postage. Coordinators are volunteers, and cannot be expected to pay your expenses. Thanks for coordinating, Mary! I look forward to this exchange, and hope
to get a start on it in early September, once I have packed my husband
off to NYC for art school. :(
