Send Message: To this poster

Exchange #22 officially opened for sign-up about 22 minutes ago even though
I was OBLIVIOUSLY writing a too-long email to a friend and didn't change
the acceptance message until just a moment ago -- even though the first
signer-uppers received an error message instead of a 'thank you' message,
never fear -- the mail came through and your sign-ups will be duly entered
in the order received...

http://www.barenforum.org/exchange/exchange_sign-up.html

The link above is where you may register for Exchange #22, open-theme
Chuban, about 10 x 7.5 inches (25.5 x 19cm) -- prints due November 1st, 2004.

Sorry again (and again) for any frustration or confusion -- hit the
'refresh' button on your browser before signing up if you still receive an
error...

Good luck!

-- Mike

Send Message: To this poster

I normally use graphic chem oil based ink but I ran out of black of all
things before finishing a print for WEN block and burin. As every thing besides
the ink was the same so lets look at what happened.

The graphic chem oil based ink printed very evenly and applied very well.
Did not fill in the details of my wood engraving block. Now if I could only
get used to using baby oil for clean up. Clean up is the only drawback.

The Daniel Smith water soluble relief ink does not roll out as thin as the
graphic chem ink and tends to fill in the details of wood engraving blocks but
I think it would work better for wood cuts. Clean up was much easier. This
water based ink is the best out there if you must use water sol. printing
ink. Such as for a school or a place with poor ventilation. A far better grade
than speedball but still not as good as oil based western relief ink.

Hello John,

Thanks for this report.

I have some Graph. Chem. water based block printing ink but have not tried
it. Have you used it as well, and if so, how does it compare with the
Daniel Smith?

The Graph. Chem. stuff is not rewettable ... I think it is acrylic based.
That has its good points and its bad points. For work with children, I want
the ink to be rewettable ... washable after drying. Is the Daniel Smith
rewettable?

Cheers .... Charles

The DS water soluble inks are permanent upon drying--they are apparently
oil-based, with something added to make them water soluble before they
dry. This came up a few years ago on baren. I'm not sure how I learned
about the oil content--I think it was in conversation with someone at
DS. So, when I first used it, I wrote asking DS if their water soluble
inks posed an oily rag hazard, and learned that it does.

I still have a few cans of black, which is all I use, and found that to get
an intense black required too much ink, which in turn filled in fine
lines. On the other side, a thinner coat of this ink showed up blemishes
in the surface of a block which would not show up with oil.
