Gayle,
I like to use the standard bookbinding tools like a bone burnisher or Teflon
folder.

Volcano has a great small, palm size triangular Teflon folder that has 6
useable edges for different situations.
What are you trying to emboss? Are you using Arches?

No expert on embossing. I have really only done it with a press, except
for experimenting. I figure my fingers and elbow do a nice job, I can feel
around it and know where to push in.
