Hi Mike

I know this may seem impractical but is there any way that you could post the times that you are on the cam??? I keep going there but have not caught you yet.
Would'nt it be a great idea if you could actually post a time and give us some more pointers; step by step.
I am the first one to say that I should have paid more attention to all of the demos at the Baren Summit, but guess I was caught up in the member to member activity and did not absorb as much as I could have.
Just your confused and confusing Baren member!!!!

Kind of you to look in, Jeanne -- I miss you guys, too! That was very fun
(almost a whole year ago) to meet everyone at the Summit! I've been a poor
host lately, and the web cam is currently 'looking' at a small part of the
studio where nothing much has been happening for a month or more -- and
I've been busy doing other (non-web-cam) stuff... I'll try to move the
thing to a more interesting view soon, but I've been working 'all over' the
place lately... Not sure where I can point it where there's going to be
regular 'action' ... I'll give it some thought...

Thank you all for the good wishes, and useful hints for a trip to Japan. I
want to make this trip count!

I saw Mike's "big ugly heads" (at least one of them) and they are pretty
great. However you approach things, you get the best by pushing yourself,
using whatever tools you can do the most with. Mike has developed this crazy
system with the router... whatever works, I say! The Proof is in the
Pudding.

A looong time ago someone mentioned using methylcellulose in place of
rice paste, the main advantage being that there would be no mold. My
rice paste was dried up and no good and I spent hours in KC last June
bringing it back to life, but it was adverse to resurrection. However,
I have a bag of mc which I use for sizing when making paper, so I mixed
up a quart and have been using it for moku hanga ever since, and wonder
why anyone would use anything else. It never molds, is easy to
prepare, is relatively non-problem-causing (wear a mask when monkeying
with it in powder form). It has no acid properties, therefore no
problems with the paper, it just seems to be the perfect medium. Sooo,
does anyone know of a good reason for not using it?

Happy Printing,
Sharri

We could see Mike using his machine. On his studio cam.
I learned a lot at the last summit and did not pay total attention to the
demos, but they were good. Hands on is better. Sooo we need another summit
for those of us who were just getting our feet wet last time and now might
need more tips. And of course for those who missed the last one.
I wish I had that machine of Mikes now to carve out my round circles. Any
tips on getting them round the old fashioned way???

Does Methylcellulose have a non-tech street name? Where can it usually be
purchased.
Sorry if this is really sub-novice question -- but I am a sub-novice
printmaker!

Yes, yes, yes! April had recommended it first, I think. And another
good thing - bugs (and other creepy crawly things) aren't attracted to
it. It *will* get mold however - if you leave it out on your printing
desk for a length of time in the spring or fall in Oregon! :-)

I use it, and really like it - but as with anything else, YMMV (your
mileage may vary).

Hi Matt,

Welcome to you - sub-novice questions are just fine!

I bought mine at our local Art Media store - but I'm sure you can find
it online at Daniel Smith & probably many other places. Don't think
it *has* a non-tech name. It's basically the stuff that is between
paper fibers to hold them together - in a powder form. Smells like wet
newsprint or paper mache when you mix it. I've been using it for
about 3 years now & really like it. You only use about a teaspoon to a
pint of cold water. If you are really worried about it, you can use
distilled water - I use well water & the results have been just fine.
100 years from now? hmmmm..... who knows? Mix thoroughly & then go
back later & mix more, it tends to settle into a gelatinous layer at
the bottom of the jar. Just keep stirring. You want it to be sort of
thick, but not so thick that it won't come off your dipper onto your
block. Incidently, I use popsicle sticks for my stirrers & dippers.

Have fun!

Ceramic suppliers carry it. Usually at a very good price.

Waiting for 3 sets of prints to come. Also have to wait for the cases to arrive. Hopefully everything will come this week and I can get the prints out.

Georga,
We had a little problem with the cases, I sent them to Mike forgetting about #20, and because I sent them to the big building we had the summit meeting in and not his home, they came back. So they had the scenic tour or the USA from the back of a UPS truck. We have several extra cases from each exchange, so when Mike gets them all we may have a little sale of the extra's one of these days if anyone wants a case and did not get one. At any rate they should be in Kansas City very soon and then on to Darrell. Life is never easy, but I am very happy that Mike is handling the cases from now on!
Best to all,
Barbara
