Hi all,
I don't want to take up too much of your time but I just joined [baren]and
wanted to intoduce myself.
My name is Bill Auge and I'm a printmaker/painter/teacher living and working
in the Philadelphia area. I recently found [baren]after a recommendation by
a friend already involved. My work is mainly black and white woodcuts. I'm
a teacher in the Camden City school district (NJ)and I make drawings of my
students. I then create woodcut portraits of them using the drawings made
in class.
I've been reading the postings for about 2 weeks and have already learned
from them. I am more interested in making western style prints and was
happy to see that the forum was not restricted to the Japanese techniques.
I look forward to taking part in future discussions and am happy to be a
part of this community.
I also just jumped on board exchange 20.

Welcome, Bill. Do you have any of your work showing online? I
particularly enjoy seeing portraiture in woodcuts.

Greetings from the Japan Center for Michigan Universities (JCMU)! I am
writing to let Baren Forum subscribers you know about a course that is being
offered at JCMU in Hikone, Shiga Prefecture this coming May. The course is
Japanese Culture and the Woodblock Print. It will be taught by Dr. Barron
Hirsch of Saginaw State University and runs from May 6 - 24. We have a few
more openings for this course, and I am trying to "get the word out" in a
targeted way. Please see the JCMU website
for more details.

Just as a quick background note...JCMU is a product of the sister-state
relationship between the State of Michigan and Shiga Prefecture. It is
located on the shore of Lake Biwa in the City of Hikone, Shiga Prefecture,
Japan. Its programs are dedicated to building relationships between
Japanese, Americans, and other nationalities through active learning and
participation in language, culture, family life and society.

The May Short Program is an opportunity for individuals interested in study
abroad to get a taste of life in Japan while earning college credit. The May
Short Program welcomes students from all majors and of all ages and
backgrounds. Instruction is in English and no prior Japanese language study
is required. The program dates are May 6 through May 24th, 2004. Contact the
JCMU office at Michigan State University or review the JCMU web site for
details.

Thank you for your time and consideration,

Hello everyone,
Last night I realized that I'd worn two small spots in the sheath of my new
Murasaki baren. I'm writing because this came about after a mere dozen or
so keyblocks and what I thought was careful oiling and moderate pressure.

I'll be replacing the sheath but I did want to see if anyone had any
thoughts on just what went awry so I can avoid having to replace the sheath
after every dozen blocks. Note that there's no cracking; only two tiny worn
spots where the cord is beginning to peek through.

Pressure uneven? Need to rotate the sheath? More oil? Faulty sheath? Or,
my pick, klutzy beginner?

And while I'm on topic, Baren Mall is out of sheaths and McClains charges
nearly $5 a pop...any other sources?

Thanks much,
Gonzalo

It's new Gonzalo, so there are undoubtedly 'high' spots in the coil,
which cause such quick wear ... There's no way around it I'm afraid; it
just takes time for a new baren to break in, and your first sheaths will
all wear out quite rapidly.

There is a section over on my site that talks about breaking in a new
baren:

It's turning out to be a very bad year for sheaths, because of recent
weather patterns. We won't be getting any in the Mall at least until the
next crop comes in during the summer ... $5 is not any kind of a
'rip-off', at least not this year ... Sorry!
