Dear Bareners

I'm happy to announce another excellent edition of Simply Haiku online
magazine featuring Japanese shortform poetry and artwork, which includes
a feature of woodblock printmaker Takuji Hamanaka.

http://www.simplyhaiku.com on the contents page, top right hand column
under "Haiga: Traditional Forms"

Please enjoy your visit. Make sure you read all the "haiku" - and
practice for any future Baren exchanges! :D

Thanks to this publication who continues to promote our passion to the
world - Japanese woodblock printmaking!

Bette,
This was really nice, a good example of contemporary work using moku hanga.
I got interested in what makes up haiku so spent a little time looking it up on line, I am not much of a word smith but think even I could do one of these! Lots of fun, describing our lives in so few words.

I am looking forward to this next exchange and vote for a small format...sort of a strong but simple image to go with a strong but simple verse....I also vote for not carving the words, we will have to attach the haiku with a cover sheet, or maybe put it in the collophon. That will certainly be easier as I am still learning to carve, after 5 years it still looks like I do it with my toes instead of my fingers! Maybe in 20 years of so.......
Best to all,
Barbara

I'm happy to say that Takuji Hamanaka was among the several teachers I've had
who gave me the confidence and know-how to proceed the way I was going. One
of the others was April Vollmer.

I have tried everthing I can think of to contact Lana Lambert. Lana, if you
are reading this - there is something wrong with your e-mail address in your
e-mail program. Please check and make sure it is spelled correctly. All of
my messages to you are coming back to me marked "no mailbox by that name
here". The address I have from your e-mail is:

If this is correct, then you need to contact your service provider as it is
not working.

Does anyone know of any short courses in Japanese woodblock printing in the
UK?

Cheers

I received my Puzzle Project prints the other day. Everyone who
witnessed the opening of the package (several generations of
pseudo-family) was impressed with the whole idea of a international
puzzle block--and they helped me hold the curling corners down for first
viewing. Thanks for your hard work, Maria and Barbara. :)

The majority seem to be still asking for the smaller paper size for
this exchange.

Surely the paper size doesn't matter so much if you still prefer to do
a small print, but if you are carving English letters of a poem into
wood to print surely you can give those that want a larger format to
use a bigger size paper.

I have just carved my Large Print Exchange in calligraphed letters and
you have no idea how difficult it is to carve curved lettering... I
certainly won't be doing that for the #21 Exchange, but would like to
include carved lines of lettering in this exchange.

Maybe we could use Twice this paper size and fold them in half!

See you...back to the drawing board!
