Never tried that, but I will give it a shot very soon! Thanks for the thought!

Congratulations Maurice! I knew they looked good. I still have your koi
proof hanging prominently. By the way, I have misplaced your e-mail, if
you would resend it.

I would guess the layer separation problem should be solved by using eterior grade plywood.

reduction prints -- one thing i found that works so you don't lose your
drawing when the block gets stained by the ink -- I varnished the block so the
ink can just be wiped off and not stain the block. One of the advantages of
using oil based ink in reduction prints is that you can print light colors over
dark ones.
So your planning can be much more complex.

Welcome to all the new members posting.....

Congrats to Maurice on Best of Show, lots of Koi prints in the past few
Baren exchanges...a favorite subject for sure...is there a place online we
can see your tile/prints ? If not...see below....

John Furr...very nice image of John Centers leather/woodblock jacket,
thank you and I also liked your print "Mountain"...good composition....

Dan...."I wish we could post pictures, I've actually documented the whole
reduction block process via pics and scans."

re web access....you can upload small-sized images of your prints or other
woodblock printmaking related subject to "Show & Tell" on the website,
there are instructions & guidelines there on how to do it.......

http://www.barenforum.org/messageboard/guestbook.html

Anyway.... for you image deprived folks...I found a very old link I put
together a while back with prints from a card exchange in 2000-1...don't
remember much about it or wether these images have ever been online
before...maybe someone can refresh my memory what it was all about.......I
am sure there are many images missing on the page but you'll recognize
many familiar names:

http://www.skokienet.org/bandits/jcrstuff/printm/

Maria...will I be getting a sample of your parachute gadget along with my
Puzzle prints ? I be happy to do some
beta testing for you.... by the way....do you have a unit ready to fit my
left-handed knives or is there an adaptor kit I can purchase ? Thank you
!

Finally..for all those of you struggling thru all the ink and
building-presses hurdles and figuring out wether to build or to buy...I
found something that may be of help:

http://www.skokienet.org/bandits/jcrstuff/photojr/jrp0002.jpg

But seriously...here is a photo of my Vandercook Model 02 ....$150 used,
800lbs, brought home taken-apart in the trunk of my 93 Pontiac, green
cabinet included in the deal. Works very well for woodblock relief...bed
size is about 28" X 36" or abouts....only limitation is the height of the
block cannot exceed the .914" used for type.

thanks......Julio Rodriguez (Skokie, Illinois)

I'd like to thank everyone for their input on 'cheap' presses. I am truly a
beginner here, and I must admit that a good bit of the jargon used on this
list serve is flying right over my head.

It all started when I decided that I wanted to make myself some bookplates.
I started out using illustration board, X-Acto knives, a rolling pin and
some leftover acrylic paints that I had lying around. The next thing I know
I've acquired a couple of books and a bunch of speedball inks and lino zips
off of ebay and my apartment is looking like a Kindergarten classroom! I
had forgotten just how much fun this all was back in middle school when we
made paper and linoleum block prints, which was also the last time I took
an actual art class.

Now I'm thinking about using my tax refund towards a small press instead of
that new laptop I've been pining for. While I'm still many miles from
considering a serious press such as the ones from Thomas or Takach, I did
find Douglas Forsythe's "Build your own Press" site quite interesting. I
was already thinking that my friend would be able to knock out a version of
a Speedball Model B press. Collectively, I know the right people that I
would be able to create a big mamma press sometime down the line. Even
those who aren't necessairily looking to build their own press, might want
to take a quick spin through the site. Others have contributed drawings on
how to build your own bench, plate storage rack, etc. In fact they even
have a sketch of a really cool drying rack that uses marbles to hold your
prints in place!

anyway, thanks again for all your help

Maria Arango, it rains in the Pacific Northwest all the time, so I
sympathize.

The same thing happened with my chisels, too, but I devised a kind of glider
system. When the chisel fell and reached a certain velocity, little wings
would pop out from the shaft.

Well, you can imagine what was wrong with THIS idea.

We used to have a cat, too.

Usually the plywood used is furniture grade hardwood variety which is
unfortunately not usually sold in exterior grade with waterproof glues...

Frankly, I dont see any benefit to wetting birch ply, it is easy to carve,
and anything increasing the risk of chipping off fine lines is bad. The cherry
ply I carved was equally soft.

I do agree with dampening the surface of the wood after initial sanding since
it does a good job of raising the nap. Then let dry and resand the raised nap
fuzz off. Finally coat with vanish to seal and keep splintering to a minimum
when yoiu carve.

Take a tip from japanese woodworkers, and now many north american
woodworkers... coat your chisels with camelia oil, and keep recoating them as you carve,
it makes carving go very smoothly... even in harder woods. I dont know if
woodblock carvers there do that, but cabinet makers and such do. It should work
just as well as wetting the wood, but if you are going to print hanga dont oil
the wood itself...

Of course that is just my opinion...

Julio, nice press... I am getting one very close to it this spring... it is
costing me the same as you paid, but I have to drive two days to get it...

If you go back to the link I have posted the pic of the vandercook I am
getting this spring:

Similar press for sale on ebay now.
Vandercook #2 in San Diego area for sale on ebay right now, $350 US....

HI,

Am currently wrestling with my internet provider. ATT keeps bouncing my e-mails to individuals .... I can't even send them a complaint.... that message bounced too. If this keeps up I will be writing participants from my hotmail address so please don't delete me. The address is: charlieovershoe@hotmail.com

Want to let John Furr and Georga Garside know that their prints arrived safely today. 21 sets now in.
