I rather expect all of us who have joined more than a few exchanges will know or be able to guess some of each other's work, but my main reason for suggesting anonymity is because of young family members who live across the country from me, for instance, who have said they like to check if anything new by me is online. They type in my name in a search engine and surprise! I have been surprised too, by the way. Anyway, a couple older people I know (who prefer the hearts and flowers type of art) also tell me they check from time to time to see if I have something new online. Anyway, I do like the idea of NOT (don't mean to make it sound like a shout, just a slight emphasis here) putting names directly with the images, though the names could be there without a link to a particular image. Or we could use cool sounding pseudonyms. What do others think about this? If you knew your name would be linked with the image you send and it would show online, would that curb your expression? ~Gayle >On Wednesday, October 22, 2003, at 09:00 AM, >owner-baren#ml.asahi-net.or.jp wrote: > >Since I am only an alternate and haven't even been in an exchange yet, >I am not meaning to press this opininion, just blabbering. It could whet your appetite and would be interesting if we could actually come up with the correct person for each print. Of course a lot of us who have been with the Baren for quite awhile would easily figure out who did what. I, personally did not enter this one but am looking forward to the results (especially John of the Furry Press!) Jeanne N. >GWohlken wrote: >I had originally asked about this on the list, Janet. Adds a little drama to the exchange. I'm not worried about who looks at the art or what they think with my name attached - we have no control over what other people think. But, if you have squeemish or uptight family members, this may be the best way to go. It must be hard to be a free spirit in those circumstances. :-) Really looking forward to seeing what comes of this exchange. It has to be some kind of first for a group to have a shunga theme. And it is driving the e-mail filters crazy. They pick up on the words "n*de", "er*tic", "n*ked", etc. But I still get ads in my mailbox every day, as I'm sure all of you do. The spammers seem to find a way around every type of block. Thank the powers that be for that delete button! Oh, and on the case/album question - Iwould prefer to have an album and to tip the prints into it myself. But it would be nice for all of us to have the same type of album, I think. I *really* don't want mine to be bound together into a book. People have enough trouble following sizes, etc. without adding a requirement for a certain orientation or an empty border here or there to be stitched. Let alone the wide variety of papers that we all love to use. From hard stiff papers to limp onion-skin tissue - and we sure don't want to limit the kind of paper to use. My .02 on the question anyway. I think I'll go take a cold shower now.....Hahahahah! Though it has been a challenge I would like to thank everyone who encouraged me to get re-inspired by signing up for an exchange. As soon as I did life seemed to double with distractions but the obligation of printing for this wonderful group of printmakers added another level of commitment to my work. I found little bits of time to carve and print and though I changed the colors so much on this reductive print so much that I am essentially sending a group of 31 monoprints, I am sending them though. One of my professors once told me that it is tradition for a client to view several prints from the edition and choose whichever they prefered, even if a black and white etching, as the slightest variation in plate tone or richness of color may influence the decision- of course this implys that the buyer has a very discerning and probably educated eye. I thought of this as the variety of my monoprints became more evident--however in this exchange format the participants of 18a will all be surprised and I hope you get the one you like. This accomplishment has been a challenge but very satisfying- and has encouraged me to continue. I'll definitly have more practice with deciding on the colors by the time I can sign up for another exchange . I am really looking forward to seeing all the other prints coming my way! It would be fun to guess , but more professional to tell. However , if anonymity is decided , I am prepared because I also work under my maiden name backwards.
