She is just awed over the many talented people in this forum as I am. Yes, Bette, she should just jump in as she is certainly capable of doing some very nice prints. I have a couple of hers and am very, very proud of them. I remember when we started and am amazed at the improvement of so many members. When you know that your work will be seen by many , you have some trepidation as to how your work will be received. We all have to start somewhere! You are too kind! Not much chemistry involved on my end, but there IS seven+ years of Japanese technique woodblock printmaking and approaching four decades of printmaking in general... In the last six months I have pulled more than 10,000 impressions by hand using my baren (an edition of 100 * 18 blocks 1,800 impressions, for example)... So usually I think about repetition like this: after 50 repetitions, you can usually remember the order of operations. After 500 it may make a little sense. After 5,000 it begins to be unconscious. After 50,000 you own it. 500,000 -- I haven't experienced that enough, so can't say... I've heard other people say, "Each repetition adds a thread to the cable of habit; Excellence is a habit, not an act; We become what we repeatedly do." I don't know whether my artwork has any real meaning outside my own mind, but technically one can't help but improve with a lot of practice, practice, practice... After a lot of repetition we "become" the process, don't you think? - -- Mike >At 12:22 AM 10/11/2003 -0700, Marilynn Smith wrote: >Mike Lyon, I have been traveling, so have not commented on your work. Hello, everyone! Bette's comment about Iowa girls prompted me to come out of the lurking closet and say hello and thank you for all the great information and comraderie that I have enjoyed through out my very quiet membership of Baren. Furthermore, all the conversation about the exchanges led me to investigate upcoming ones, and the site advises active participation in the forum is encouraged. Anyway, fellow printmakers and especially Iowa girls - I look forward to joining up in an exchange soon! Alright! Hey, I lived in Des Moines in grade school, then again from 1981-1988. What a great city. Caye, I'm glad you came out from your lurking. Please do participate in the exchanges, you're life will be so much better for it. What is your specialty in woodblock printing? Hi all and thanks for all the encouragement to join an exchange. One of these days I will surprise you all and do it. Most of my time is better spent with mono types, collographs (sp)and etchings. I have a great appreciation for wood block but as to producing images in that medium, I really suck. I promise to try again sometime. My main reason for being on this list is to enjoy the conversations regarding art/printmaking. The subjects of conversations as well as technical information is invaluable. My non art friends and family just glaze over when I start talking art, so it's nice to be able to read the list and have little conversations with myself about the topic. Thanks to all of you for being there wether to ask questions or to answer them. Oh! And keep the Haiku coming. Two days later, and I am still 20 short. And the wastebasket must be 40 long. Today I cleaned the big boatshed, burned, hauled garbage, painted some boards, did everything but go into my studio to view my pitiful efforts.... tomorrow's another day! surely i will crank out not twenty but forty perfect prints, and they will be in monday's mail out to the big world. and yes, bette, they will definitely leave a trail of smoke behind them! this gets easier with time, right? ----aimee ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V25 #2404 *****************************
